Some of the loot you pick up is locked behind a pay wall.. And then just sits in your inventory reminding you to buy the packs.

It's a really fun game, but is not a good EDF. Play EDF 4 or 5. If you don't have any other EDF games to play, you can play this one but you shouldn't expect much: - Just 52 missions, other EDF games have around 100 missions - Character customization is just meh, could be much better - Weapons are copypaste, there's no variety like other EDF games - Not challenging at all - You can't sing with your party, what kind of EDF is this

So, if you intend to play singleplayer or local coop, I would consider it much better than the mainline EDF games. I really appreciated a lot of the changes made here as someone who doesn't have nostalgia for the originals. However, online coop is barely playable. We experienced constant issues with enemies in completely different locations, and quite a few times one of us would clear out all enemies and the other player still saw half a dozen mechs bearing down on them and have to finish the mission solo. The desync issues make this a major consideration if you are debating picking this up on sale.

EDF Iron Rain comes off as desperate, like a stalker that watches you from a distance and never bathes. They talk to themselves and want to wear your skin as a coat. Speaking of which, would you rather have a variety of weapons or a variety of character customization options? There's more clothing customization options than weapons. The controls and camera mimic the typical third person shooter, but become super awkward if you try to use the flying armor. (Typical EDF controls are Option B.) The camera is also over-the-shoulder by default, reducing how much you can see to the left. In a game where you can get swarmed, this can lead to nasty surprises. I'm currently about 25 percent through the story, and though it's bad so far they could surprise me. They're trying to give character to all your squadmates, though, and it's generally cringe. At least, what I can hear, because they talk during combat. They actually talk throughout the whole mission, and I'm not sure they ever stop. Weapons feel ineffective, and it feels like enemies take too much damage. I received a DLC weapon, though, and was told I could use it if I paid. I'm sure that would solve the bullet sponge problem. ;D I like the enemy designs so far, though the ants blend into the background as a result of their coloring. I really like the look of the robot turtles and the stinkbugs, and sometimes the stinkbugs ignite their hindquarters to launch themselves at you. It's cute in a weird way. Overall the game is very "meh" and though I'm only 25 percent through it, I don't have high hopes. I'll update the review if it changes.

Avoid at all costs. Its sad because the character creator was really the only Draw to the game for me. 1st red flag: Unable to change the music/graphic's until you finish watching the intro video. and it blasts the sound. (i'm sure you could go into the the configs and change it in there, but why should i have to go that far) 2nd red flag is it crashing during said intro video non stop. (Tried a few fix's from the net, they did little to help) 3rd red flag now is the "Fix's" that the net suggests put it into an infinite crash / boot loop fight with steam lol (again tried a few suggestions from the net that lead to this issue, it honestly made me laugh out loud) Asking for a refund, le sigh.

No 2k support, 60fps cap, desync issues, can't turn off mouse acceleration, and those were the issues my buddy and I had in the short time with the game. Go buy EDF 5 instead!

I have played multiple EDF games and I really want to enjoy this but I could not get past the low resolution and the bad mouse & keyboard controls. For a PC game this is just ridiculous. First time I launched the game, the ingame text changed itself from English to what I think was Japanese. A restart was required to change it at the main menu. It was fine after selecting English again. Now let me clarify what the issue is with the resolution. The highest resolution for the game offers is 1920x1080 but the internal resolution ingame is a lower. I'd say it feels closer to 1280x720. Anti-aliasing didn't help much due to the low resolution and I thought it actually looked worse with it on. The cutscenes/movies looked a lot better than the actual gameplay for me. The Field of View (FOV) felt very narrow for a PC game but it is playable. It is not customizable so please be aware of this if you get nauseous from low FOV. The keyboard controls isn't necessarily bad but it felt like some inputs were dropped. The mouse on the other hand feels like no one has ever played a PC game. It feels more like an analog stick with a deadzone and poor sensitivity controls. I tried playing multiplayer alone as host and joining with random people but I had lag spikes every 3-5 seconds that made the camera swing me all over the place. In singleplayer, I did not suffer from any lag spikes.

(Updated Review) Now after ~50 hours, I still can't recommend this game. EDF Iron Rain is a decent game, but is an awful EDF game. This game is a downgrade from EDF 5 and a sidegrade from EDF 4.1 so get either game instead. I would recommend EDF 5 since 5 is an upgrade from 4.1. Here are a list of the good parts and the issues after beating the game twice now. The Good: + Prowl Rider is one of the best class and the most fun class in EDF Iron Rain. + The WX sword is the best sword and most fun sword in EDF Iron Rain. + More mission types, like defend the point/objective and hold out until enemy wave ends. + Customization is nice. + Sprinting is no longer awkward. + Subtitles. The Issues: - The Radar Only shows whether an enemy or item is above you, below you, or on the same level as you. Meaning a drone 100 meters in the air is shown to be the same height as a drone 20 meters in the air. - Guns feel awful to shoot and use. Guns fire more realistic tiny projectiles, unlike in the main EDF series where guns fire large round projectiles. So while the guns are kind of more realistic, it feels awful. - Enemies are more bullet spongy. Less enemies mean that enemies are given more health and combined with the weaker guns mean that enemies just feel tanky and soak up way to much damage. - Enemies barely show any signs of damage. Large enemies don't have a noticeable hit or stun animation and most weapons hardly show any signs of damage. Damage is shown via a drawn on damage texture that glows then slowly turns black, similar to the EDF 5 bullet hole decal. Since guns have smaller projectiles, it is hard to tell whether something has been shot since the bullet holes are tiny. Explosions share the same decal as bullet holes and are instead enlarged, but the decal is dependent on radius of the weapon and not damage. This is unlike EDF 5 where the less health means more damage on the creature. So it is hard or impossible to tell how much damage has been done to something that has been shot. - Shopping for Weapons. After 50 hours and obtaining like 8,300,000+ credits I have purchased most of the swords and orbital weapons. I haven't purchased a single railgun or energy thrower and have only purchased a few basic guns and a missile launcher. Since you can't test out guns before purchase and you have to buy health as well, there is no point in buying a gun that you haven't used before. Guns of each rank cost roughly 3 times the amount you get in a single mission. Each mission on each difficulty gives a new gun every 2 or so missions. Meaning you can't buy every gun you unlock and that is ignoring the fact you need to buy health. Not to mention the fact that using items lower the amount of money you get. - Weapon balancing is terrible. Unlike in main EDF games a newer version of a gun doesn't mean a better version of the gun. For some reason the devs decided that a better version of a gun should have some downgrades compared to the older version. For example, a lot of shotgun upgrades get more damage but also longer reload times. The starting shotgun has a reload time similar to EDF 5 shotguns while the end of the line shotguns have reload times similar to or longer than EDF 4.1 shotguns. - Large enemies are not fun to fight against. Large enemies are a bullet sponge and barely have any sort of reaction to damage. The kaiju you fight against have no damage indication, basically imagine fighting erginus in EDF 4.1, but he doesn't do any reaction to heavy damage and there is no blood splatter. The large enemies like this games version of hectors have a slight reaction where they temporally stop moving then resume action. The large turtle enemy does have a reaction and the other enemies should have something like it. - The movement is slower and doesn't get faster. There is no mobility increase like in EDF 5, so all classes remain the same speed at all difficulties. This is like older EDF games and makes it harder to kite and avoid hits in higher difficulties. Since mobility is king in EDF games the fact that you don't get faster means that the game gets really difficult in higher difficulties. - Trooper/Ranger's boost/dodge is limited and has a cool down. The second slowest class in the game that fights in close range can't constantly dodge. Combined with the enemies faster speed this means that once you get swarmed you die instantly since you run out of dodges quickly. - Missions are short. Basically every mission is like mission 3 of EDF 5 (Or mission 2 of multiplayer) or mission 1 of EDF 4.1. 3 waves of similar number and that is it. - Difficulty is just difficulty. Unlike EDF 5 and 4.1 higher difficulties mean enemies are just harder there is barely or no changes to maps and enemy types. In EDF 5 and 4.1 higher difficulties mean there can be an extra wave or advance enemy types spawning in missions. - Ai companions are worthless. Since enemies are in lower number the developers nerfed your allies into being pure decoration. Allies can't shoot upward and don't shoot towards the enemy. And the enemy hardly aggros on the npcs and instead home in on the player. - All large enemies have a set death animation. Basically all enemies larger than an ant does an erginus death animation and then their corpse sink into the ground after a certain amount of time. You can't move their corpse and it sits there blocking you. There is also a glitch where an enemy can play a death animation twice, where after finishing a death animation if the corpse gets hit again it restarts the death animation. - Stagger and knockdown in EDF Iron rain is the worst in the series. Instead of being slowed down you play a staggered animation where you can't shoot and for prowl rider your grappling hook is broken. Attacks that stagger will result in a knockdown if you get hit in the air. Meaning an ant's acid staggers you on the ground and knocks you down in the air. Unless you use swords you will constantly have to deal with this since swords have a super armor ability that makes you immune to knockdown and stagger. This means that grappling hooks aren't broken and is a must have weapon for any prowl rider. - Poison and other effects are a terrible feature. Poison and burning cause damage over time that staggers you whenever you take damage. A poisoned or burning prowl rider is as good as dead since your grappling hook is automatically broken after a few seconds. - Heavy striker uses double the guns, but reload is doubled meaning most weapons are terrible for striker. - When knocked down you still take damage. - Building debris fall too fast. The demolition is like a zoomed in scale model demolition. - Building debris knocks you down and can stagger. - Explosions stagger you regardless of damage. - Jet lifer can't air strafe while flying without using power. - Health limit is 10,000. - 52 missions means not a lot of content. - The boss fight is the worst of the series. - Motion blur seems to be on, regardless of setting. - Customization menu is cluttered and a mess. - Voice setting also affects enemy death sounds so you either choose to have a hard time hearing allies chatter or going deaf from death screams. - Ally chatter is always sound distance and doesn't come from the ally but instead from a random direction. Radio chatter is the same as EDF 5 so that is fine. - No song and chanting. There is a chant like emote, but there is something awful about it. - You have to buy each cosmetic's color individually. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that cosmetics can cost 90,000 credits. - No big punching robot. - The big main kaiju fight is just a set of cutscenes. - Health drops heal less than 30%. Small ones heal probably 10%. Unless you bring healing items don't expect to heal much from health drops. - Item pickups can spawn outside of the play area and you can't each them. - Pillars are a terrible since they activate from ally gun fire.

I can overlook all the other technical issues, but AIM ACCELRATION THAT CAN'T BE TURNED OFF? It's unplayable! WHEN WILL DEVS UNDERSTAND THAT AIM ACCELERATION SUCKS? It NEEDS an option to turn off aim acceleration. Until then, stay away from it. **EDIT** the game was patched after two weeks, and after trying the game i'd say go play EDF5 instead. Iron Rain is just boring. I played 200 hours of EDF5, i can't bring myself to play more than 5 hours of Iron Rain.
