About the Game

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE

The year is 2084. The future has turned out much darker than anyone could imagine. First, there was the Nanophage. A digital plague that killed thousands upon thousands of those who chose to augment their minds and bodies.

Then came the War, leaving both the West and the East decimated and shattered. With no one left to seize power, corporations took over and forged their own crooked empires.

You are a tool of corporate oppression. Feared and despised, you hack into the darkest corners of your suspects’ minds. You creep into their dreams, expose their fears, and extract whatever your investigation may require.

You are an Observer.

BECOME A NEURAL DETECTIVE

You play as Daniel Lazarski, an elite investigator of the future portrayed by late cyberpunk icon Rutger Hauer. As an Observer, you hack into the minds of suspects to extract clues and evidence. Anything they felt, thought, or remembered can and will be used to solve your case.

EAT THEIR DREAMS

Using a device known as the Dream Eater, hack into the minds of the dead and dying to relive their final moments, to explore their fears and obsessions. Delve into these twisted neural mazes and search for clues that will help you find the elusive killer. But beware: the deeper you go, the greater the risk of losing your own sanity.

TAKE IN THE ATMOSPHERE OF 2084

Enter a world ravaged by war and cyber-plague, where life is cheap and hope is scarce. Where most people will do anything to escape their grim existence. Virtual realities, mind-altering drugs, neural implants - pick your poison and drift away into a blissful oblivion. But remember, no matter how deep you go, you can never hide from an Observer.

Veteran Observers can dive deeper into this dystopian reality thanks to three brand-new side cases to solve. “Errant Signal”, “Her Fearful Symmetry” and “It Runs in the Family” add another layer of depth to the game’s story while exploring thought-provoking themes of a future that soon might become our present.

On top of that, System Redux offers expanded gameplay, which includes new game mechanics, new secrets to find, redesigned stealth, additional neural interrogations, and quality-of-life improvements made with the help of the Observer community.

Newcomers get the chance to experience one of the most thrilling cyberpunk stories in all its next-gen glory: boasting 4K resolution, upgraded textures, new animations, models and effects, and transformed with jaw-dropping Ray-Tracing and HDR lighting.

This is effectively two games. Half the time, it is a deep cyberpunk noir story, where you as a detective use your implants to collect clues and solve a murder inside a small but extremely detailed and complex location. The other half, it is a very bad horror game. When you will stop playing detective and start playing itch.io quality horror is a complete surprise, and sadly the former takes up less and less of the game as the story progresses. I deeply wished I lived in the timeline where the devs picked a lane and stayed in it instead of trying to force a particularly bad version of their usual horror game formula into an otherwise fantastic game concept. The parts that aren't trying to be scary are so great that I'd suggest playing this anyways, but be sure to get it on sale, and expect a lot of your time to be wasted with redundant, poorly stylized and painful-to-look-at imagery that conveys information you already were told through the far better investigative side of the story.

Highly atmospheric dystopian cyberpunk horror mystery 'walking simulator'/adventure game. Unfortunately, i have encountered a progress-halting bug. As the game only has auto-save, i cannot reload an earlier save to try and avoid whatever caused it, as i did for the previous two major bugs i encountered. Also unfortunately, the game has not been supported basically since release. This is essentially an update to the original game (which is no longer listed on Steam). The owners of the original game had to basically petition just to be given a discount on this updated version. Unfortunately, unlike the games made by another famous games publisher who also make buggy games and have a similar unethical practice of selling 'Definitive Editions' as new games, this game has no accessible console commands or mod support, and so i cannot fix my game. It is basically linear, so i won't replay 8 hours just to get back to a spot where i may simply get stuck again. It would be nice if the publisher would either pay the developers to fix the game, or give me a refund.

I do hope Steam has a neutral button or something. I really want to love this game, and I do love its world building, its lore, and of course, Rutger Hauer's performance as Detective Lazarski. The first few hours into the game were quite good and immersive, but the gameplay soon became dreadful and boring, plus the bugs that deeply affected the experience. Still, I do think it will be okay for players who love this genre and have more patience than I did.

I'm not sure if I can find the words to describe how amazing and incredible this game is. Apart from being technically incredible and flawless, from an artistic point this game is kind of a masterpiece of the Cyberpunk Genre. ALL the art design is absolutely incredible and unique. It's tackling deep, complex and serious issues, in a fully adult tone. So you're investigating a series of murders in an apartment building, looking for clues and most of all you'll be linking to the victims brain chips, in a sort of VR experience of the victims' persona, memories, traumas and most of all their last moments before getting killed. But what spices things up is that your own traumas might sift in those VR memories, but maybe also in the real world... Anyway I have now immense admiration for Bloober Team because this game clearly comes from the guts and minds of those developers. It's in my opinion just as major as the Deus Ex games. And I really really hope that one day Bloober could come back to the world of Observer and make an even more ambitious game. Because with their talent and the amazingly credible world they've created here, if they could make an immersive sim game I would just throw my money at the screen !

A disturbing walking simulator with 5% of "hide from the monster" sections, which were more tedious than scary. Stunning visuals, Amazing voice acting, Above average story, Great setting, Decent Music, crappy bittersweet endings. Recommended if you like walking sims and cyberpunk setting. 8/10.

Amazing as the original one. I like the visual improvement and all. Also the game looks good with or without Ray Tracing. Only way I could tell that Ray Tracing was on was due to a huge FPS hit. Problem solved by turning it off and runs extremely smooth on max settings. Never finished the original one tbh (had forgotten it) but now I will certainly do so as this is a close to Cyberpunk you can get without playing CP 2077. Lastly, I appreciate the devs heavily discounting this down to like 5 bucks for owners of the original one. Play this while you brace yourself for yet another CP 2077 delay! XD

"I got news for you, rustbucket."

The year is 2084 and Daniel Lazarski is an Observer -a special investigator working in the police department of the futuristic and dystopic Krakow, right in the beating, biomechanical heart of the Fifth Polish Republic. On a dark, rainy, drenched in green neon light, morning he receives a distress call from his estranged son, Adam. A call that sends Daniel to an apartment building in the slums of the city, in search of Adam and figuratively down the rabbit hole: a headless corpse and a suspicious lockdown of the complex later, finds Daniel Lazarski frantically searching for his son while fighting for his sanity and perhaps, his life.

"Forever is the privilege of the dead."

In this cyber/biopunk psychological thriller, humanity has found a way to transcend the physical limitations of the flesh by means of cybernetic augmentation such as mechanical prosthetics and neural implants, among others. Obeying the law of cause and effect, a divine punishement for hubris or, perhaps, simply in a cruel twist of fate, a plague dubbed nanophage afflicts those who have been cybernetically enhanced. The infamous 'AA Glitch' has turned the nanobots responsible for easing the (unholy to some) union of flesh and machine against their hosts, killing thousands upon thousands. "A heavy cost for meddling with our minds and bodies." Daniel laments in the prologue -rightfully so. As if the horror of a digital Black Death wasn't enough, mankind is yet again thrown in a world war conflict, nicknamed the Great Decimation. As West kills the East and vice versa, dead bodies pile up. The losses on either side: astronomical. Winner(s): only one -CHIRON. A megacorporation that seized power as the dust settled upon the ruins and is effectively governing a reforged Poland as the Fifth Polish Republic. In the words of a deeply disheartened detective: "a crooked empire of blood and ash". The new authoritarian administration implimented a strict societal class system of 3 tiers, where Class A and B are the privileged citizens (as much as privilege goes in a totalitarian regime) and the rest 91.6% of the population is thrown in Class C, the abysmal citizenship status where human rights and freedom are labeled as dangerous, unpatriotic dissident propaganda. Such an arbitrary goverment needs an equally oppressive unit of enforcement, capable of using advanced (and unethical) methods in order to keep a tight grip on the populace. Enter the Observer: a police detective, primarily tasked with contacting neural interrogations with the usage of the DR-3AT implant, colloquially referred to as the "Dream Eater". The procedure involves the Observer peering into the mind of the persons who are being interrogated, with the aim of extracting information from their memories. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2937773626

    "Iam in control. Iam..."

As soon as i finished Observer for a second time, i rewatched the original Blade Runner (1982). I was in a hurry to do so, not only to spot the ideas in Ridley Scott's masterpiece that inspired Bloober Team to create the game, but mainly to confirm the impression i was left with, by film and game alike: that of the feverish, maddening visualization of the two dystopian worlds. Both delightfully portraying their noir cyberpunk setting -and also very unsettlingly. Elements of horror are present, predominantly in the later part of the game. I have read complaints in reviews about the disruptive effect that horror has on the narrative and while i also prefer the 'detective' side of the story over the 'hide and run for your life' one, i disagree with the notion that the shifting of focus to the horror genre in various stages of the game, is a bad thing. Without going into spoiler territory, the aformentioned elements are critical to the story as a whole, especially the biological-horror themed ones and generally the developers did a good job clueing the player in as to why these shifts are happening. While i haven't played the original Observer, the graphics in this remastered version are amazing. The detail given to the various enviroments that Daniel visits throughout the game is astounding, fleshing out a world of decay. Exploring is highly rewarding since every visual detail, no matter how minute, is memorable. On a sidenote, i played the game with film grain on, but i understand why someone else would be annoyed by it. Personally, it added to the atmosphere but you might consider turning it off for a clearer visual experience. Music and sound design in game are both commendable, pretty much what one would expect from a heavily themed, bleak cyberpunk game. Inspired by similar works in this genre (mainly Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell <1995> OSTs), the synthesizer-heavy ambient tracks create the ideal atmosphere for the grizzled detective to explore the derelict apartment halls and the choral tracks, albeit few, drive the nail home by creating feelings such as awe and bewilderment, at the right place and time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2937368427

    "Observer."

My final thoughts on the game are about the Observer's actual job: targeting the poor and desolate third-class (literally) citizens, aiming to weed out potential insurgents.Behind the facade of police officers, the Observers are Chiron's henchmen -whether they like it or not. Dreaded and loathed by the general populace, their semi-prestigious status as law enforcers must mean little to them, especially to those who are conscious of what they really contribute to society and of the threat, that they are always on the verge of becoming to it. Observers are described as "ticking bombs". The constant use of the Dream Eater takes its toll and succumbing to the mental strain from violating minds and meddling with foreign memories is virtually unavoidable, with its outcome being unpredictable: since the mental collapse of an Observer led to a mass shooting incident, carrying firearms is prohibited for the unit of special interrogators. By literally delving into one's mind it can be argued that an Observer is taking an intrusive peek into the abyss of the human psyche and it does come at a cost -the abyss will eventually stare back at the one who observes it. This is my attempt to entice you into giving this amazing game a try. Cheers! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2936415934
