  This is a highly abstract wargame where the abstractions combine elegantly to become more than the sum of its parts. For example, the game has a concept of command points each turn. Each area also has a number representing rail capacity. A rail capacity of 3 means 3 free supply points per turn. When rail capacity decreases in certain area of operations, you are forced to make decisions around prioritizing supply (via truck or horse, which is not always successful) vs. attack/movement. The player is thus forced to tradeoff meeting supply vs. achieving objectives which I think does a good job of conveying a decision that a general would actually need to make. I also like how this game models fog of war. Except for air attacks you can't directly choose which units to attack, nor do you have an exact idea of their strength (unless you recon). You also don't know exactly how tired your men are at any point in time (except for special events). When you attack there isn't an odds prediction or CRT table, but instead must rely on a feel for the situation (which you learn over time). This combines to make the game feel less coldly calculated; you are compelled to play by feel. This can be disorienting at first without concrete numbers to inform you on whether attacking is a good idea or not. Finally, the game is extremely well-researched. Other games might care about the caliber of individual weapon types, but the detail in CoW is more about high-level decision making, political events, relationships between generals, various operations, atrocities, etc. and how they impact the overall direction of the conflict. Don't miss out on this realistic, immersive game with a lot of depth hiding underneath the accessible exterior.

  No one's actually mentioned this before but the dev notes, with tips and historical insights in the game are the best thing ever. Also this is such a great game.

  Pros- URAAAAAA! Cons- the 6th Army is surrounded in Stalingrad please send help. I've had the game since the beta dropped, and I'm happy to say I've enjoyed every minute of it. It gives fresh perspective to the massive amount of challenges both sides face during 42', while still being very tasteful or pulling punches, which I respect. It's not a game where one strategy works every time, where yesterday's blitz straight to Stalingrad means today's attack will also proceed flawlessly. It's not a game where the AI will sit and let you roll over them; it's a fight, sometimes for every inch. My first game, I think I drew a draw; my 2nd, a minor victory. And you know what? That's okay. In fact, it was more than okay; a lot of people forget that WW2 wasn't won on the back of one or two major victory, but many, many minor and even pryhic ones. There will be operations where you have stunning successes, bordering on miraculous. You will have battles where, on paper it looks like a clean sweep, until 2 months later you weep bitterly as no progress has been made on the road to Baku. And I love it. 10/10 would get bogged down in Stalingrad again.

  Another home run by the developer Maestro Cinetik. Every time I play this game, I learn something new. And great depth like the last game. My only suggestion is that it would be nice to have a review button during the turn for all the screens that pop up before the turns. I often forget info like what the results of my barbarity score will be, the victory point goals, or other important info that I don't have access to during the actual turn. Keep up the good work Maestro. Like I've said before, you really hit upon an intriguing war game concept.

  This game has promise. It looks great and has an interesting new approach to wargaming. However, it doesn't work out well in practice. The difficulty makes it almost unplayable, even at the normal level. You'll spend 90% of the game trying to keep your units supplied. On the rare occasions you can actually launch attacks, they just stall almost immediately because of supply problems, or because the enemy is overpowered, or because command points are so limited that you can barely do anything in a given turn. Supply problems were a major problem on the Eastern Front during WWII, but this game takes it to an ahistorical level and really kills the fun of wargaming besides. The command points really don't make much sense, as there's not historical or gameplay rationale for thinking you can only move two units per week. It's sad to say this about a game that has so much potential, but it just isn't fun. It needs a serious overhaul.

  Interesting take on a WW2 strategy game. This Game is about the operational level of the war and its brutality (something rarely covered in games seriously). And the way this game covers both is unique compared to most contemporary strategy games. Showing you can cover the horrors of war without visuals or being edgy and "apolitical".

  Great continuation to CoW: Barbarossa. Operational level (except for the Stalingrad scenario) turn based wargame, very easy to get started, very hard to master. Stalingrad urban warfare scenario is great addition and it's worth the price of the game just for itself. Also the developer is eager to communicate with users and his (optional) footnotes in game give great insight. Totally recommend

  Having played a lot of hex based war games, I love the way this game uses fronts with units attached to them to simulate combat. It's really different and means the game is focused more on the strategic rather than the tactical level of warfare. If you've played the previous game in the series, this instalment does a good job of adding new features to represent the changes on the eastern front between 1941 and '42, and adds more alt history options. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this game.

  All the things you loved in loved in Cauldrons of war Barbarossa but improved. The Soviets while weak become more of a threat as their inevitable counter-offensive looms; can the Germans take their objectives in time.
