  Played on Quest 2 using Virtual Desktop (fuck airlink all my homies hate airlink) Yeah… I mean like… It’s a game, if you want to play it.

  Gameplay

  BONELAB is the impatiently awaited sequel to BONEWORKS, a game that basically invented physics in VR. As such it plays almost exactly like BONEWORKS. Almost. A couple of things are different. Melee weapons actually being usable, and the vaulting/climbing system being the big two. Melee weapons part is self-explanatory, so I’ll talk about the climbing system. It’s a pretty big downgrade coming from BONEWORKS. In BONEWORKS, you have to actually lift yourself up and over ledges and platforms in order to stand on top of them. In BONELAB, you get this weird “hop” over ledges you are not specifically grabbing onto. This makes climbing incredibly frustrating when you’re just trying to climb a ladder and then suddenly you get flung off the edge at mach 16. I suspect they did this change because of the 100% fully physical body compared to BONEWORKS 95% physical body, but hey, what do I know? Other than that, it’s BONEWORKS, but newer. Can’t really complain about that now, can I?

  Campaign

  SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD Oh boy, here’s where we get to the big stuff. There is no campaign in this game. Do not play this game for the campaign. You will be sorely disappointed. Why am I saying this? Well I’m glad I asked. In total there are 16 levels in the campaign of BONELAB. Minus 2 because 2 of them are the Main Menu, so that leaves 14. Level 2 is the BONELAB Hub, so minus 1 because that’s essentially just another menu. Level 4 is an autoscroller. You can put the headset and controllers down for this entire level, it literally plays itself so minus 1. Levels 6-11 ARE ALL TUTORIALS FOR YOUR CHARACTERS. I’m not joking with you, I really wish I was. Minus 6. Level 12 is literally the end of level 5 so you can get the story spouted at you. It’s 30 seconds long. Minus 1. That leaves 5 whole levels for you to actually enjoy. That’s less than 50% of the campaign. Now I might be being a little harsh here with this but even if we give back a level or two because they’re fun, that’s still less than 50%. I don’t know about you, but I’m not buying a 40$ single player game to be entertained 50% of the time. Not happening. Fortunately, that’s not actually going to be the case.

  Extras

  This game has A TON of extras, including extra levels, experiments, keycard rooms, and the mods. Ironically, a lot of these levels are actually really fun, like the arenas and the combat trials. Those are absolutely definitely worth playing. If you’re going to be playing this game, this is why. Not for the glorified tutorial that the campaign is. BONEWORKS/BONELAB(s) combat system is too good not to at least give these a try.

  TL;DR

  It’s BONEWORKS, but not really. It’s like a BONEWORKS DLC. If you really want more BONEWORKS, go ahead and give it a try. Otherwise wait until it’s on sale. I wouldn’t say it’s worth the 40$, but definitely try it at some time.

  when you get your vr get boneworks or bonelab its a really good vr game would recommend

  About BONELAB...

  When going into BONELAB I was expecting a brand new game and I ended up getting BONEWORKS 2.0. DON'T GET ME WRONG, as a huge BONEWORKS fan I don't mind this and I LOVED this game and still love it. The problem is that this game isn't as innovative as BONEWORKS was. I was kind of expecting more of a Portal to Portal 2 type of situation but it just ended up being more like Half Life 2 to Half Life 2 Episodes. A lot of the game has seen improvements in the combat department and physics department, however I found the campaign rather lackluster and more confining than BONEWORKS campaign. The campaign is good for combat, but they didn't make more use out of physics puzzles with the new and improved engine and gadgets. Even the avatar swapping feature made more of a presence in one level only once you get the ability. I think that body swapping is cool but they could have put more campaign levels to highlight these features. I wish the campaign wasn't on rails as much either (unlike BONEWORKS where there were multiple routes throughout a level to reach your destination or big wide open spaces for you to explore), but in some areas the on the rails sections did elevate the experience (like the Hotline Miami themed level). Besides the campaign, BONELAB improves in every other area over BONEWORKS no doubt about it. I don't have too much to say about it since it just feels like a welcomed update to BONEWORKS. No, it isn't revolutionary and no it isn't going to change VR forever (probably) like the first game did. If other developers could use the Marrow engine to make their games then I would say it would be revolutionary but what we have right now is just a easier to mod game. Hopefully in the next SLO game they can make the Portal 2 to my Portal.

  It's good but i have some pet peeves Moon Base and Pillar Climb are terrible It's too similar to Boneworks The fact that you need to unlock the campaign The way you unlock the campaign The fact that some people don't even know there's a campaign
