As good and if not better then I remember. They dont make RTS games like the original sudden strike series anymore and that a damn shame. If you are an old Sudden Strike fan then get it. If you have never played it before but are a fan of WW2 strategic RTS games then get it.

i am deeply nostalgic about this game. here's why: way back when i was a little turnip, my dad would regularly take me out of the house to go to places i like so my mom could catch a break from the stresses of raising a child. on one cold winter day in 2001, when i was about 7 or so, i went to walmart with some allowance money in my pocket and i bought myself a value pack largely consisting of world war 2 games on a whim. the main star of the show was sudden strike with an mission expansion pack to complement it. when i first installed it on the family windows 98 machine, it took me a good while for me to wrap my head around sudden strike's mechanics. when i finally did, i fell in love with it. sudden strike is single handedly responsible for turning me into an RTS guru nerd who knows about games that all of 5 people in the US care about. i'll admit that some of sudden strike 1's gameplay design decisions are a bit janky, but a few elements have stood the test of time. namely, the way the units react to damage and how you have to handle logistics is done incredibly well. for being my very first RTS game, i could have done a lot worse.

One of the best classic games about WW2. Played it a ton when it came out in 2001. At the time I thought the graphics were amazing and the gameplay was brutal - assaults are fast and furious with little room for error. Nowadays I think this may be too complicated for many RTS players since the controls are outdated - playing the larger missions is more tedious than fun because of path finding and unit managements. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1153653727 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1155063729

Sudden Strike 1 is probably one of the most gruesomely realistic WW2 combat simulations ever developed. A whole infantry regiment can get killed to one single tank if they happen to be out of grenades or heavy weapons. Every soldier, vehicle and unit has their own ammunition count, each separetely for all their weapons. The scale of Sudden Strike is absolutely fantastic too and it has a massive amount of content to explore. Spent 150 hours with just all campaigns alone, not even touching the scenarios. A brilliant game from the past, a brilliant game today, even though it looks extremely dated, it's not as bad as first gen 3D games which look a lot worse than sprites do today.

First of all, don't mind the thumb down for now. I'll explain it in the second part of this review. First, let me tell you about the game itself. Sudden Strike is the third game in a Russian game series called Counter Action (AKA Counteraction, AKA Ostfront), which started in 1997. Counter Action and its sequel were pretty basic, but kind of fun real-time tactical games (real-time strategies without base building and resource management), where some missions also allowed us to use up to three bombers. Sudden Strike is pretty much a proper new step in the series (the second game, which was released only in Russia, felt more like an expansion pack than a sequel) with completely new and improved gameplay. Like in Counter Action, we can't build the base in this game. Instead, every mission is presented as some sort of tactical operation, in which we should use the limited amount of units to achieve certain goals. Sounds pretty dull, but the game actually gives you a pretty nice amount of freedom (for example, you'll be able to capture the enemy cannons), while some missions will even depend on what you did before. Like Counter Action, Sudden Strike includes both Soviet and German campaigns, but this time there's also the third one. So, if you ever wanted to play as Allies in Counter Action, Sudden Strike is here to give you such option. Every campaign comes with 10+ missions (like I've said, some missions will depend on your actions, so, you won't be able to play all maps in the single playthrough), plus this exact version comes with the official expansion pack called Sudden Strike Forever, which adds four new campaigns, news scenarios and stuff like new landscapes, so, there's quite a lot of content here. The worst thing about all that is that... well, you've guessed it. It's a Russian game, which means that it's pretty rough and and unpolished. Sudden Strike was released when Russian developers only started to learn about how to make games and naturally, even though the guys already had some experience from their previous games, it shows. Missions in Sudden Strike can be extremely frustrating and confusing, the units and other things are way too small (for example, the mines in this game presented as only two gray pixels), so, people with poor eyesight like yours truly will suffer a lot, AI can be pretty dumb, etc, etc, etc. And yet, playing Sudden Strike feels a lot like playing with those awesome WWII dioramas that everybody loves. Controlling all those historical units from different countries, using the bombers (yep, those are still here, even though using them is not nearly as easy as before, since you'll need to do some reconnaissance first), building and destroying bridges, healing your soldiers in special trucks, fixing the broken vehicles, capturing the canons and doing other awesome things that became available in Sudden Strike... it's just cool. So cool that even the lack of properly re-created historical battles in the campaigns can't ruin the fun here. So, what's the problem? Why's the thumb down? Well, the thing is... Steam release sucks ass. I'm sorry for saying that, but it does. The entire thing is so broken that you'll end up suffering a lot and there's literally no way to get a proper full experience here. The first problem is DPI glitch. It's easy to solve, though, just go to your game folder and change the executable file's settings. The second problem is a sound glitch, which prevents you from hearing any sound in the game. Again, pretty easy to solve. Just go the game's folder and rename the executable to “game.exe” (you'll need to run the game directly from you HDD after that, don't use Steam client). Unfortunately, there's also the third problem, which can't be solved at all. See, the original Sudden Strike used to include CDDA music. And those of you who know what it is already got what went wrong here. Long story short, CDDA music meant CD music that played directly from compact disc and required to have that disc presented in your CD-ROM drive all the time. Back in the days, it allowed developers to use high quality audio without requiring any extra space on your HDD. Nowadays, though, it means only one thing – problems. See, not only CDDA music requires you to have the original CD in your drive all the time, your CD-ROM drive should always be the drive D in the system. Otherwise, there's a big chance that the game just won't find the music. So, what do the normal people do when they want to release games with such music in modern digital stores? They convert CDDA tracks into lossy formats (like MP3, or OGG) and make the games to use those files instead. You can see such stuff in games like Total Annihilation here, in Steam. Now, what do the stupid a-holes do? They just say “Screw it!” and release the game as is. With no music whatsoever. That's it, guys, like Clans (man, Steam version of that game sucks!), this version of the game has no music during the missions. Sure, if you have the original CD, you may put it into your CD-ROM drive. On modern systems it's pretty easy to change the drive letter. But the questions are – why should you pay for the game again if you already have the physical copy of it and where should you put that CD in case if you want digital copy because your cool new gaming rig doesn't have CD drive at all? Nobody knows. Nobody cares. No music for you. End of the story. So, what should you do? Well, as usual in such cases, there's a GOG release to save the day. Sure, GOG is not perfect too and has its own share of crappy releases (freakin' Dark Reign, for example), but this time? They've totally nailed it. Right after installing the game, you'll notice that it comes with an extra folder called (surprise-surprise) “music”. I think you can easily guess what's inside. That's right. The freakin' music! For both the original game and the expansion. In OGG format. Sure, it's still the music from Western / European releases of the game (the original Russian version used to include some pretty cool tracks, including the licensed song by a famous alternative rock band called AuctYon), but come on! That's how you do it! Why? Why didn't they do the same in Steam?! I have no idea. I've actually bought the Steam version after the GOG one just because I wanted this game in my Steam library, but man, it turned out to be a huge disappointment. There's even some guy's profile presented in Steam version! What the heck?!! Who's Monty64?!! Why did he play my game before me?!! Why did he left his profile there?!! GOG version has nothing like that, why this one does?!! No answer... So, I think that at this point you've got a pretty nice idea about why did I give this game a thumb down. Sure, Sudden Strike is not perfect, but it's a pretty neat tactical game in WWII setting. A game that I actually want to return to from time to time. But the thing is - if you want to experience it – no matter what you do, do not buy it in Steam. Go to GOG (not a sponsor) and buy it from there. Because unlike this version? The one from GOG actually gives you a full and proper experience. Dixi.
