Starcom: Unknown Space Funciones

Explore a mysterious open-world universe filled with alien factions, strange worlds, mysterious artifacts and an epic story.

As a new commander you and your crew will transform your ship from a small scout into whatever you want: a deep-space explorer, a fast strike craft or an armor-leaden battlecruiser.

Meet alien races, both friendly, hostile or enigmatic. Turn foes into allies and vice versa.

Investigate new worlds and anomalies to unlock new technologies, gather valuable resources and discover the secrets of this unknown universe.

Features:

  • Explore a fully open-world universe with multiple quests and a deep story

  • Build your own starship with different weapons, defenses and modules

  • Research new technologies

  • Survey unique planetary anomalies and investigate mysterious celestial artifacts

  • Talk with different alien factions, each with their own strengths, weaknesses and motivations

  • Fast-travel between discovered wormholes

Fans of Starcom: Nexus should know that the overall game mechanics have remained similar (with a number of improvements), this is not a direct sequel-- it is a brand new story. New players will not need to be familiar with the plot of Starcom: Nexus to jump right in.

Overall opinion: awesome work ... well done Kevin and I'm looking forward to the finished game (with the many suggestions I submitted during the closed beta implemented - I guess you had too much on your plate to deal with them pre-launch). I will recommend it to everyone I know. It has the same sarcastic jokey style that I loved from Starcom Nexus, the right balance of trustworthy and untrustworthy / complicated aliens to deal with, great graphics and great battles. Plenty of inspiration drawn from Star Trek, Elysium, Babylon 5, etc. I love the sophisticated ship builder and ship colouring options, and the expansive research tree. The addition of an upgradeable crew with individual figures is great. The game has an interesting story line, which doesn't hold your hand too much and requires some serious detective work and trawling through the log to understand clues.

I like it. The combat is fun, there's a decent variety of weapons that interact well despite the apparent simplicity (I forgot that you could shoot down missiles with your plasma turrets, which you could also do in the previous game), and exploration feels satisfying and rewarding. Pretty bug-free as well, especially for what's currently an EA title. I've only noticed one minor graphical glitch so far. There's lots of little features that are part QoL improvement, part upgrades from the last game, like how you now have a crew with skills that influence the outcomes for investigating anomalies or you can research artifacts you've brought aboard your ship which can help you figure out what to do on certain quests. Real FTL vibes. Anyways, on the whole, the game's a step up from its predecessor. Better graphics and effects, fighting's fun, exploration helps guide you where to go but still keeps things mysterious enough to not be predictable. Looking forward to when it reaches full release and all the content that comes with it. Even then, this is still worth your money if you have the slightest interest in space combat/exploration-type games.

So this game is getting a thumbs up because the game does almost exactly what it sets out to do. I say almost exactly because it's advertised as RPG but I'm just not feeling or seeing any RPG aspects at all. Just because I can level up my crew doesn't mean it's an RPG... But regardless, the game is really good in a lot of ways, only really failing in one way. The universe doesn't just look empty, it feels empty. The game will have you spending 5 minutes to get to a star system, to explore it and find barely anything, fight a couple of enemies, then do that exact same thing again 4 more times. All while telling you a vague description of your quest like "You jumped into a part of space where the red ships keep attacking you" and that's it. That's the quest. No direction, no hint, no nothing. Just a statement of what you're currently going through, but I'm not sure how that's a quest or how that's supposed to help me. Eventually I got so bored I had to leave. So why am I giving it a thumbs up? Because the game has great art, great contrast, great designs, great sound, great writing, an interesting gameplay mechanic, fully customizable ship and crew, research tech tree, length and solid pricing. The game is early access. And for an early access game to have so much attention to detail, appropriate pricing, and the only real complaint is that it feels empty, means for an Early Access game it's doing it how it's supposed to be done. Obviously it's empty, it's not finished yet. But from what I could tell it didn't really fail in any other way. So if the idea of a slow space exploration game is something you're really interested in then you'll probably really love this game. But if you wanted something with more action, faster paced or more in depth unique exploration...well the games not quite there yet. If you'd like a more in depth look at the game then please check out the video on my YouTube Channel (Link Below). Otherwise, thanks so much for reading and I hope I managed to help some of you out there to spend your money wisely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpRw-tlZ26A

Please ignore the playtime on the review. I've been in the closed beta test since September, so I have roughly ~44 hours in the closed playtest and as the last build I tested was the launch build, I haven't played it enough yet. Anyway, I'm that "reviewer" from Starcom Nexus. Short Version = It is a far improved game over Nexus, and its worth picking up in its early state. ===== Long Version = Like Deckard Cain used to say, stay a while and listen... Things the game has improved over issues raised in my Nexus Review: -> All core anomalies, linked to achievements appear achievable in a single run now. -> All of the research topics work as advertised (as far as I can tell). -> All purchaseable objects are now in the trade window, so you always can acquire them all, regardless of gain order. -> No missions involving getting parts to assemble from destroying ships, like the communicator quest in Nexus. -> There isn't any research that is considered mandatory anymore. So no, having to research warp hoppers at the endgame or no need to research a weapon to destroy the phage. -> Shipbuilding is vastly improved and you can make a lot more varied looking ships. There is still room for improvement here, but it is way beyond better than the Nexus method. Other issues raised in the Nexus review: -> The post-launch support didn't happen because the features were too difficult to implement, and so Kevin rewrote the entire game from scratch, and made it easier to implement such features. Things that were impossible to do in Nexus, appear quite doable to do in this one. Do note that some features from Nexus aren't present yet as a result; ie Flak Cannons, Axial Ultraguns, and Drones. -> Lore is fairly light at the moment, but what there is, is engaging and interesting and makes cognitive sense. New improvements in this one: -> You can enable (or its enabled by default) a directional indicator, so that you can move and dogfight now with enemies. Very useful, when your ship is on fire. -> Fire effects on your ship, when damaged. Bit overdone at the moment though, but it is very pretty. -> The UI for tracking quests is vastly improved, over Nexus. -> You can now place very descriptive notes on the star map and easily remove them. -> The trade UI with aliens is vastly improved, over Nexus. -> Graphics are amazing and kept a solid 60 FPS at all times. I often had dips in Nexus. -> Sound design is excellent and there is a variety of nice musical tracks. -> You can now set a destination and travel automatically to there. Less tedious flying in the big dark. -> Crew is far more valuable now and can grant bonuses to ship-to-ship combat too. -> Map is more randomized now, so things aren't always in the same spot. So it keeps a linear game quite a bit fresh. We might see fully procedural gameplay later on too. -> The new universe feels fresh and believable. More so than the one in Nexus. Overall, its worth your time to buy it and play it. The current build Betelgeuse has about 6-8 hours of content, so give it a go.

It's a sequel, and it doesn't stray too far from the original. It's a 'more of the same but with a bit of polish' sequel, if you liked the first game, then you will probably like this, if you didn't like the first game, then this will not be to your taste. If you haven't played the first game then I would recommend picking that up over this, given that it's a full finished game and is about half the price

This second offering is much like the first at base (thrown into an unknown region, must explore for resources to upgrade ship) but the difference in style, the addition of auto-pilot, the crew system and make it just enough different to be enjoyable. If you enjoyed the first game, look at this as the second chapter or a rewrite. Its still in early access, but its been fun so far. Just when you think you're doing okay... man, you find a new class of enemy.

*smacks lips* soooo. This game is a "why would you play the first one?" game. IE: Zone of the Enders 2 and Rouge Legacy 2. It has (almost) everything the first game has but refined and improved. Things are more explained and easier to follow, events now have more than 1 out come that you couldn't predict(now you can see the dice roll for the outcome), the snarky condescending researcher that crack jokes on you that you will miss the first time because you're too stupid to get them is 100% more condescending and crack more jokes about your monkey brain. If you played the first one. Starcom: Unknown Space more than likely WILL follow the early access route of the first one but with a lot more things to do at the start of the game unlike the first one. Still wish there was a meter to tell you if a faction hates you or not but at least the game tells you how aggro works this time. Oh yeah. The 10 out of 10 new feature. AUTO MOVE! Click the map and go afk. now all we need is an auto fire upgrade

First impression. Looks like the previous Starcom game (which was good itself) but with better visuals (quite a lot better, actually) and many QOL interface enchantments and mechanics (like crew abilities). Honestly, its a best Star Control ideology successor from the games I know.

Loved the first game and this is a nice upgrade over it on all fronts, though still also very similar for good & bad. The first early access build is stable and has a good amount of content, while still setting up a solid foundation to expand on over time. Played this on SteamDeck where it works perfectly (No config boot, Ultra Graphics, Stable 60FPS, 16:10 res support, game design fits handheld platform) though it does require creating a custom input layout as the default doesn't cover all inputs and isn't very intuitive.
