Kopanito All-Stars Soccer Funciones

Early Access Summary

Kopanito is now more than 2 years in constant development. Everything started back in July 2014. For the first year the game was developed internally and then we decided to hit Steam Greenlight. This is also our first game!

This post is a short summary of the whole Early Access period, which is now ending (and we like summaries). Leaving Early Access is a big milestone for us too.

If you've monitored the game's progress for some time, then this post may give you a better picture of the whole development process overall. Hopefully you will find this lecture interesting.

⚽️ The Idea behind Kopanito

So why to make an arcade 2D football game in 2016? We've started working on the game in 2014. From our research it appeared that there weren't many popular arcade football games available on Steam. And having a choice is a good thing.

Clear inspirations for the game were classics such as Nintendo World Cup (graphics, crazy super-moves), Sensible Soccer and Kick Off (skill-based gameplay). We've spent countless hours on these games 20 years ago ːkopanitosmileː So why not to make something similar today?

What does skill-based mean? It means, that you need to learn the game's mechanic over time (like in real life football). You need to work out your precision and reflexes to be a better player. Luck means little in Kopanito. The better player just wins and there aren't footballer stats that can help you. You are the stats. Super-moves also are skill-based, the better you play, the more of them you gain during a match. Some super-moves can neutralize opponent's super-moves.

Kopanito is also a game that we wanted to play. To bring back fun to football games. We've made it with love, working sometimes on weekends or in overtime, being vocal on the forums and responding to the issues reported.

⚽️ Greenlit in 2015

17-26 August 2015

Kopanito is on Steam thanks to the Steam Greenlight process and votes by the community. The 9 voting days were very stressful for us (as probably for most indie devs). You can still see the original Kopanito's Greenlight page and how the game looked like in 2015:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=499023836

⚽️ Early Access

17 September 2015 - v0.2

Kopanito has been released initially on Windows and OS X (Linux support came later).

At start there were 104 national teams in the game, 7 stadiums, 4 super-moves, practice mode, friendly matches, 7 tournaments and local multi-player. The graphics were a little simpler. There was no higher AI levels, only the beginner AI.

⚽️ Pixel Heaven and Poznań Game Arena 2015

September & October 2015

These are two gaming events organized in Poland. Pixel Heaven takes place in Warsaw and PGA takes place in Poznań (our home town).

It was great time and first occasion to observe how a greater audience react to the game. There were guys playing, kids playing and even girls playing the game and had great fun!

Kopanito got 5 awards during these events: Best Gameplay, Big Bang!, Retro Roots, Revelation and Grand Prix. The last one awarded by the audience votes, the rest awarded by the jury.

► Pixel Heaven 2015: preparations, first day, second day, awards

► Poznań Game Arena 2015: preparations, first day, second day, tournament, third day, award

⚽️ Difficulty levels, more tournaments and teams

25 November 2015 - v0.3

Previously only the beginner AI was available, but now there are 3 more, giving a total of four of them: beginner, amateur, professional and legend (the last one must be unlocked).

This was first time when the game was available on Linux and Steam OS.

Kopanito got translated back then to several languages, but later we've decided to remove translations until game's features will 'settle'. Localization support will return soon.

Other stuff added:

9 more competitions to complete: Pacific League, Microstates Cup, Central American and Caribbean League, Pan Arab League, Commonwealth Cup, Pan American League, Mediterranean League, Continental League and World League,

10 new teams: Angola, Bulgaria, India, Israel, Luxembourg, Morocco, Northern Ireland, Puerto Rico, Republic of Ireland and Thailand.

► The "How to play" guide in the game.

⚽️ Leaderboards and match challenges

21 December 2015 - v0.4

The leaderboards in Kopanito were organized into 4 leagues: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Playing matches (alone or in co-op or online) gives you fame points. Completing match challenges (see the image below) will give you even more fame. The more fame you have, the higher you will be in the global ranking. Advancing to a higher league requires to accumulate given amount of fame shown on the leaderboards screen, different for each league. Each league is also limited in capacity.

Match challenges are additional objectives that can be completed during a tournament match (against AI). There are 31 different challenges in the game as of v0.9. Some examples:

  • "Do not concede a single goal in a match"

  • "Score a goal by dribbling past the goal line with the ball"

  • "Score a goal using the teleport super-move"

  • "Cancel a super-shot using the ball magnet"

  • and more...

⚽️ Steam Trading Cards

29 December 2015

Trading Cards, badges, emoticons and profile backgrounds landed on Steam for You to collect ːkopanitosmileː Each trading card is a fragment of a greater illustration from a match situation. It took several weeks to paint them by our illustrator.

⚽️ Achievements and custom tournaments

29 January 2016 - v0.5

The Trophies screen got added to Kopanito with 225 achievements to complete (later reduced to 224). Most of the achievements are quadruple (bronze, silver, gold and platinum), so for example winning Oceania Cup on the Legend difficulty level gives you 4 achievements (one per difficulty level). There are 70 unique achievements.

Custom Tournament is a perfect thing for parties with friends. Each friend controls one national team and you organize a cup for them, eg. World Cup, European Cup or Champions League. This is basic, but you can also do more crazy stuff, as there may be more than one human per team.

Custom Tournament can be started in one of the three formats:

  • League (round-robin) with 4-16 teams,

  • Knock-out stage only with 4, 8 or 16 teams,

  • Group stage with knock-out stage with 12-32 teams.
You can specify number of human and AI teams participating and decide how well AI will play. Progress of the competition will be saved, so you can also make longer session or more parties!

⚽️ Freeze super-move, replays and GIF generator

1 April 2016 - v0.6

The new (back then) Freeze super-move allows you to embed nearby players in an ice-block (except goalkeepers). Note that you may also freeze your teammates too. Frozen players wont participate in the game for some time. You can slide tackle a frozen teammate to defrost him faster.

The ball can also be frozen or, actually stopped, even in mid-air. It's a good method to cancel opponent's shots, including super-shot. Try it for yourself :)

Also action replays got added, activated automatically after goals. It's a side-product of online multi-player which was then in development. Up to last 8 seconds are recorded and can be replayed back.

An action replay also can be processed into a GIF animation. This feature was inspired by the first GIF animation uploaded by one of the community members. Greater collection of player-generated GIFs can be seen on the Artworks section of the Community Hub.

⚽️ Headers, bicycle kicks and manual passes introduced

10 June 2016 - v0.7

This update introduced important gameplay improvements. We've added headers and bicycle kicks to the game and modified the ground passes to work similarly to lob passes.

The game got more challenging too by adding manual passes (previously these were assisted). Manual passes require more precision, but also introduced more diversity in pitch situations. Kopanito got even more skill-based. The more you play, the better you are.

⚽️ Online multi-player introduced

17 August 2016 - v0.8

The big day has come. It took us a few long months to implement the online modes on an already working game (which is harder to do than doing in it from the start).

You can play with other players around the world in quick match modes: Duel (1 vs 1), Doubles (2 vs 2), Chaos (3 vs 3), Complete (5 vs 5).

The Create Party mode allows to customize an online match by choosing teams, stadium, decide of the match duration and invite friends to play against.

Neat feature is that local friends can participate in online modes too.

⚽️ Indoor stadium

1 September 2016

The new Indoor Stadium has walls around. It means that there are no throw-ins, corner kicks and goal kicks during a match, the game is faster this way. A tournament taking place in this stadium is present in the game too.

Adding this stadium to the game is a direct result of the poll organized in the game's Community Hub on Steam. Thanks everyone for voting!

⚽️ Halloween teams, improved corners, automatic passes

28 October 2016 - v0.9

4 new teams have been added to the game related to Halloween: Vampires, Zombies, Werewolves and Pumpkins.

Corner kicks now allow for more options. You can make a ground pass, a lob pass or a precise shot at the goal.

The automatic (assisted) passes are back in this update but along with the manual passes. Two passing systems give best result and improves depth of the game.

About the Game

"This is the product of what would happen if the fast-paced and thunderbolt world of Super Mario Strikers met the charming and intense world of Sensible Soccer. Sprinkle some unforgettable scenes from Shaolin Soccer and you have Kopanito All-Stars Soccer."

⚽️ Skill-based gameplay

What does skill-based mean? It means, that you need to learn the game's mechanic over time (like in real life football). You need to work out your precision and reflexes to be a better player. Luck means little in Kopanito. The better player just wins and there aren't footballer stats that can help you. You are the stats. Super-moves also are skill-based, the better you play, the more of them you gain during a match. Some super-moves can neutralize opponent's super-moves.

It may not look serious, but we guarantee, that it is. Kopanito's match engine is well-balanced. Use slide tackle to intercept passes or knock-down opponents (or even score a goal!). Pass the ball straight to your teammates (ground or air) or pass the ball between opponents. Score goals using chip shots or by swerving the ball using slow-motion shots. There are various set pieces, like corner kicks or throw-ins too, but no rules apart from that! Don’t forget, it is a fast-paced game - it might be funny and cartoonish, but it’s not that easy. Try it yourself!

⚽️ Crush your opponent with a super-move

If you play well-enough, you will be awarded with a super-move. Then you can pull the ball using a super-strong magnet (because why not) or teleport into a different spot on the field, activate a big windmaker to blow things out of your goal-line, perform a super-shot that knockout opponents down on the path of the ball and freeze your opponents with the freeze super-move.

⚽️ Try it with your friends

There is support for up to 5 controllers (4 gamepads + keyboard). Try the game with your buddies in a friendly match in various game modes – in any desired combination including 5 vs AI game or play in cooperation through a tournament. You can create own tournaments (league, knockout or league + knockout). You decide about stadium, ball and number of teams. You are the Boss here!

⚽️ Online multi-player

You can play with other players around the world in quick match modes: Duel (1 vs 1), Doubles (2 vs 2), Chaos (3 vs 3), Complete (5 vs 5). The Create Party mode allows to customize an online match by choosing teams, stadium, decide of the match duration and invite friends to play against. Neat feature is that local friends can participate in online modes too.

⚽️ AI won’t let you rest

Four different difficulty levels. The easiest one is a child's play, while the last one... you'll pull your hair out trying to beat the game. Also, there’s a practice mode if you just want to learn basic moves.

⚽️ Many competitions and teams

Complete 17 tournaments and leagues in different parts of the world with regional national teams. A tournament consist of a group stage and knockout stage. In a league we apply a round-robin system. Depending on the type of event, there can be 12, 16, 24 or more teams competing. You can choose from 100+ national teams (even the most exotic ones) from all over the world and play on 7 stadiums.

⚽️ Goal replays and GIF generator

Your awesome goals and incredible actions can be converted to an animated GIF and shared with your friends on a different the social media channels. See the collection of GIFs created by the community.

⚽️ Bringing back memories

Clear inspirations for the game were classics such as Nintendo World Cup (graphics, crazy super-moves), Sensible Soccer and Kick Off (skill-based gameplay). We've spent countless hours on these games 20 years ago So why not to make something similar today? Having a choice is a good thing.

This is the product of what would happen if the fast-paced and wacky world of Super Mario Strikers met the charming and intense world of Sensible Soccer. Sprinkle some unforgettable scenes from Shaolin Soccer and you have Kopanito All-Stars Soccer. Impressions + I have never had so much fun slide tackling in to opponents. Modern grassroot rules of the sport do not apply, so get out there and break those legs! + Gameplay is solid and fully responsive between keyboard and gamepad. There is a learning curve involved, but once you discover the importance of team work, dribbling and tackling, everything feels a lot friendlier. + Visually a very charming game. The cartoony art direction is certainly a good call and works well. Player animations are solid. Goal celebrations are... ahem... animated. + Not a lot to offer in terms of sound effects and soundtrack, but the current offering delivers to a satisfactory standard. + A large assortment of competitions to unlock and play through including custom tournaments, practice and friendly matches. + Powers can be huge game changers and injects new life to the sport. There are four powers in total with individual strengths and weaknesses. + Support for up to four additional local players. Grab your friend(s) and charge through various tournaments as a team. + Full keyboard + mouse and gamepad support. Keys can be configured to your heart’s content. + The greater the goal difference, the more resilient and alert the AI becomes to your tackles and dribbles. Something I have not seen before, but it's a mechanic which works extremely well in an attempt to avoid further catastrophes. + Leaderboard and fame points work really well side by side. Adds a whole different layer of depth for players to continue playing and reach the Platinum League. + 225 achievements and in-game trophies. That’s 225 individual pieces of effort and excruciating dedication to unlock. + Match challenges offer objectives for players in search of small modifiers (ie. avoid using powers, score three goals in 30 seconds, and so on). You gain fame points in return for your efforts. + Friendly user interface with all the standard options you would expect from a PC title. + Online multiplayer is planned for release with the final version of the game. Early access consideration and dev feedback - A friendly warning: The AI will torture you during your first few sessions/hours until you figure out how everything works. You may even grow suspicious of cheating AI. I most certainly did. The important thing is to try and play as much as you can to get to grips with the gameplay. - Slight overkill with AI catch up speed compared to player catch up. I don't feel like the sprint button does anything when chasing the AI. - The need for more power ups or other methods of scoring (ie. volley or header) is great. - There is an audio balancing issue. Almost all audio during play comes through the right speaker/headphone. I have tried using two perfectly functional headsets and a speaker to cancel any malfunctions on my end. - Only international teams are playable. It would be great to be able to play in a league filled with fictional teams/players, just to shrug off the feeling of international play. Pro Evolution Soccer has done this for many years with great success (ie. North London: Arsenal; Hampshire Red: Southampton; Merseyside Blue: Everton). - It would be an even greater feature to allow players the freedom to create their own teams, team names, players and kits from pre-made designs, then to incorporate this team to a randomly generated and fictional league.

To say the game isn't fun for an hour or two would be a lie. But at a price point of 10.99 (CDN) there just is zero meat on the bone to want to keep playing. It took about 4 hours to play all the tournements on the beginner level to unlock the other ones. Then you are to move up to the next difficulty to again, unlock the next tiers of tournements. In lies the rub, there is no variety in the games. Yes, it's soccer. But all it is as simply put is; slide tackle, run for 5 feet and then start spinning with the ball and hope the never missing AI might miss a tackle. Then use the sniper mode to aim for one of the corners..... Rinse repeat. That is the whole game. None of the teams have any 'differnce' other then the colours of their shirts/player faces. No team is better then the other and you can NEVER outrun a defender. If you have the ball you run at 75% speed any defenseman can run down forwards. It's just a little silly. If it's on sale, grab it for a few hours of something sports on Steam. Don't expect it to hold your attention for long once you are past the first few games and your doing the exact thing every game.

My son and I love playing this game together co-op, and local co-op games are always our favorite since we can really play together. Loads of fun and high-fives after every goal.

Who would have thought this game could be more enjoyable than FIFA 16?!

When I was a child, me and my cousin would love to play Nekketsu Soccer (Goal3). Even now I have its emulated version and sometimes I'm playing it with the same joy. And I searched an alternative\better version of Nekketsu for a long long time. Years later I found "Lego Soccermania" wich was 3D and super fun to play. Today I found this gem and I'm so goddamn happy. First you are starting with an easy practice mode, controls are so easy and consistant if you ever played fifa or pes at least once. And then jumping in a tournament with AI. Difficulties are selectable. And I have to say AI is really good. You have to start at Oceania Cup.. So you cant just pick the most powerful european teams. They are locked. You have to win the tournament and unlock them. And this is really nice to me. We got stadiums, footballs, teams to unlock. We got tons of achivements. I really liked it. Online matchmaking is coming. This will be great. Really nice and cute graphics. Mayyybe sounds would be better.. But its enough for now. So.. I really liked this game. It remainded me the good old times that I was spent with my cousin.. I will never quit playing Nekketsu but I think I'll be busy with this game for a while. Muzlu Approves®

This game is cheap and fun! Kudos to the devs who had such a brilliant idea! Pros: -No demanding system requirements -Ability to play short/long games offline(local player with friends) or online as well and many tournaments and cups -Intuitive and not hard to learn (but it is tricky to master all the game mechanics, which in my opinion is good) -No referee/penalties/stamina/injuries/team tactics etc. -Less bugs than FIFA -Cheaper than FIFA -Better than FIFA Cons: - Large room for improvement in the online multiplayer This game should be well known in all the world because I got tired of FIFA and PES that every year change some players in the teams, polish a bit the mechanics and then sell the game for the same price of the previous year. Devs u deserve a CAKE! 10/10

Really good game, and they're not lying about it being skill based. See this gif of a goal I scored, partly by accident - its what made me realise this game allows for some serious skill to be developed: http://puu.sh/t13Ox/d066abd8b3.gif I've been trying to replicate that goal ever since. You can further develop skills as well - even the AI will tend to pass the ball into space and then sprint onto it, but I kept finding that when I tried doing that against professional (i.e. hard) AI they could still slide into where you put the ball, so I started turning around quickly soon after picking up the ball again after sprinting onto it and it often means I evade their slide tackle attempt and I'm gifted a glorious chance on goal. Speaking of which, scoring is an absolute delight in this game, as it should be in any football game, especially when you get just the right amount of curve on the ball that it beats the keeper. I wish airshots were a bit more complex - its nothing more than just holding down the shoot button, but then again it does require some skill with lobbing and corners before you get a prime opportunity to airshot the ball into the net. Gameplay is VERY fast on higher difficulty, the ball will travel a lot an utmost attention is required to keep up. The game certainly provides ample challenge for players and, as mentioned, the AI will start to show off their skill too (which I didn't expect, the hard AI in Rocket League is terrible, so I had lower standards for the AI in Kopanito). My only issues are: no custom-made teams, the online play doesn't seem to be working (although you can still play against people on your Steam friends list, which is enough for me), there's no in-game chat, the keyboard sometimes adds itself as another player, and your friend can't personally choose their own team. Also I wish the crowds were animated (it's like playing at the Emirates Stadium) and that there were people on the subs bench - minor details that would add some nice touches. Being able to choose what colour Player 1, 2, 3, etc, is would also be really helpful - I played locally with a friend on the same team and I had pink and he had red so it was a bit confusing. Overall I definitely recommend this game, I was already happy with my purchase only a few hours in.

The game itself is great and a lot of fun. I think this is one of the most frustrating menu systems I've seen. I wish you could permanently disable certain controllers in the settings. As it is, since I have a keyboard / mouse, gamepad, and X52 flight stick I need to go to the main menu and disable the flight stick and keyboard otherwise every match I play it will create 3 players for me. No problem, disable it in the game lobby you say? No, if you forget to manually disable a controller you join your match with multiple players, have to quit out, disable controllers again, get another invite.. etc... It's you're playing with 4+ people watch all of them have to do this once or twice. Were you in the game and hit Shift+Tab for Steam overlay? Woops, now your keyboard is active again and you have to quit out, go back to the main menu, disable the controller, and get reinvited to your game. If they can fix this it's a must buy. If they don't I still recommend the game as it's fun and skill-based, similar to rocket league.

I really want to like this game, and, in a way I do. I paid 3 GBP for this and after spending less than an hour playing, I already have some strong opinions about how this game needs to be improved. Asthetically, everything holds up. The art style is consistent througout and sound effects are clean and punchy. The problem unfortunately comes from gameplay. My first and most prominent gripe is the dribbling system, or lack thereof. Slide tackling gets old pretty fast as you get pummled from every angle and with no penalty to the opposing team. It feels impossible to manouver anywhere in which an opposing player is standing due to the risk of getting tackled by a 10 yard slide. Getting rid of the ball ASAP seems to be the name of the game. In a previous match, a challenge encouraged me to tackle 10 players without sliding (blocking tackle). I managed to do so but immediately after completing the challenge, I went right back to using sliding as my sole means of performing a tackle. There's little argument to justify using a blocking tackle. Power ups are pretty cool but theres only 6 and they seem pretty unbalanced. A rather infuriating one is an electrocuting drone which lasts much longer than any other power up. The challenges add some needed variety to the game although they can go from being mildly challenging to feeling down right impossible. You can collect stars and coins but the menu options and guide don't provide any direction as to what they mean or if they can even be used. I've complained enough so let me reassure you that there are some good points to this game. Shooting feels robust and the abilitiy to switch between manual and auto passing on the fly is great. There's plenty to like about this game but the minor annoyances mentioned above are likely to put you off playing this one often. If you have a few controllers and like to play with friends, or maybe you're looking for a cheap and causal game to play, breaking your usual FPS routine, this might be the one for you. Just make sure you don't pay too much for it as you'll likely get bored rather quickly. Message to devs: This game is so close to being really well polished. Keep working on it!
