I bought this game at a pretty hefty discount before it was released after watching trailers and reading previews. I like the game quite a bit, not at all disappointed with the purchase. I played it pretty consistently until I finished it. Overall I'd rate it a 80/100 The story is dark, set in a world plagued by demons and monsters after some sort of cataclysmic magical apocalypse. The decisions you make have very real consequences both for those close to your character and for the city where you spend most of your time. The game system works well - clearly heavily influenced by the Witcher 2. The combat is pretty good, but slightly rough around the edges. So should you buy this game? Depends on how much you like RPG's with dark stories, and whether or not you are willing to excuse the combat for not being as good as Witcher 2, Skyrim, Dragon Age or KOTOR 1&2. Finally I'd like to address the "incest" thing. Clearly people were not paying attention as your character is not actually a blood relative of the possible romantic interest.

Demonicon is a 3rd person action RPG. You follow the story of a brother and sister, which takes place in the Dark Eye universe, who find out they have special gifts when their blood was mixed. You only play as the brother leveling up through action points and gift points you earn through battles. You can level up main stats like strength and vitality, skills like lockpicking, medicine, and speech or combat skills with the action points you earn. The gift points go towards your gift skills which are like magic powers. Combat in the game is ok. You have one mainattack besides the combat and gift skills. When attacking you need to time the button pressing right to continue your combo attack. Enemies can become bothersome or annoying sometimes when you go to attack and they keep hitting you and stopping your action. Controls did feel a little sluggish and slow when attacking. You do have a dodge roll which helps a little but your character seems to move slower than everyone else. Graphics look to be from something 10 years ago which isn't bad just not up to par with some games today. Plus it doesn't matter how a game looks if you enjoy it. Sounds were pretty generic and sometimes annoying. There are some parts in town when you are running around and NPC dialog got load and cluttered when it seemed like 10 people are trying to talk over one another. Characters were pretty interesting and funny. You can choose different ways to go in the game and I chose mainly the good side of things. What was weird though was in some conversations it seemed like my character was rude and evil even though I would pick the better dialog route. The story overall wasn't bad and get me interested to see how it all panned out in the end. You could even do another playthrough to see where other actions would take you. There were some issue with the game though. Framerate issues were a problem throughout the game. No matter where I put the settings I would drop as low as 15 frames sometimes which made for some rough video. I also would see pop in at times and screen tearing. I even had the game crash on me about 5 times when I was more than halfway though the game. Despite these flaws the game was still fun and intriguing. I liked some of the characters and even had some laughs here and there. It also has replay value if you'd like to see where the different choices would take you. If you can get the game on sale than pick it up and enjoy your time.
Information / Review English
The Dark Eye: Demonicon is an action role-playing game developed by Noumena Studios.
Gameplay / Story
Two decades before the start of the actual plot, Borbarad, a powerful magician, covered eastern Aventuria with undead and corruption. Borbarad fell during a battle and his demon crown, the symbol of his rule, shattered. The so-called shadow lands emerged from his territory. Various warlords fought for the shadowlands until warriors of the goddess Rondra freed the city of Warunk from necromancers and the like. "Father", his real name is not mentioned in the game, Fergolosch and Parel together formed a team, the shamrock. However, father left because of Azaril, the high prophet of the Borbarad Church. Azaril wanted to create a powerful being and bring it under their control. To do this, she needed the help of a demon, Zhulgaroth. However, the demon asked for something in return. Azaril was supposed to offer the demon seven newborn babies, the so-called awakened ones, to whom Zhulgaroth would give strong powers, the so-called gifts. After the awakening of the gifts of the awakened, they will be compelled to kill one another; all gifts will be focused on one person who will be the first paladin. This should be able to be controlled by Azaril. Zhulgaroth was to get the remaining six souls in return, but everything turned out differently. At night Calandra notices that people are always being dragged off to the Molchenberg by someone. Calandra decides to follow them and rescue the abductees. However, she does not tell this to her father or Cairon. When the two of them notice that she has disappeared and they are told that she has descended into the Molchenberg, they fear that she will avoid the wedding with Falk. Father, who recently lost a leg, cannot follow her, so Cairon descends alone into the Molchenberg. He finds Calandra, but both are injured in a fight. They bandage their wounds on each other, which Father has always strictly forbidden, and their blood mixes. The gifts awaken and both of you can do magic from now on. They finally fight their way to the kidnapper. This turns out to be an ogre and is in the process of eating an abductee. Cairon defeats the ogre. The player has the choice of killing him or letting him go. If you kill him, the rest of the prisoners die, because the prison cannot be opened anymore because of a magical seal of the ogre. If you let him go, he releases the prisoners and disappears and so with the beginning of your adventure ..
Combat system
The weapon skills can be used to perform special maneuvers that consume stamina. There are four weapon skill trees in total, some of which are branched out with one another: bladed weapons, cutting weapons, parrying and evading. Each maneuver also offers two optimization variants, both of which can be selected, e.g. that a maneuver uses less stamina and also causes more damage. You also have the option of choosing new spells from four magic trees by awarding gift points. However, these are not as branched out as the weapon skills in some cases. However, like the weapon skills, every spell has two optimization variants, both of which can be selected. The magic trees consist of ice spells, fire spells, sickness spells and demonic aura spells.
Pro
+ compelling / dark story + good voice actor + playable with mouse / keyboard + DSA lexicon for reference + Make decisions that have an impact + free character development + Achievements and trading cards
Contra
- Bosses way too easy to defeat - lifeless cities with little interaction - bad AI - no free saving possible
Conclusion
he black eye: Demonicon offers you an exciting and gloomy role-playing game, which is technically out of date.
Information /Review Deutsch
Das Schwarze Auge: Demonicon ist ein von den Noumena Studios entwickeltes Action-Rollenspiel.
Gameplay / Geschichte

Neither a Triple A rpg nor does it have top notch gameplay but extremely well done game nevertheless. The Plot: The plot is quite interesting but may put off some people, personally i love it. Its not very deep and has a few plot holes but manages to pull through. The areas in the game also ain't that big. Standard RPG formula, main plot brings the player to different places where he/she can choose to clear side quests(basically made up of kill this, collect that). Within the main plot there are crossroads where you will have to make choices and side with either faction. Without spoiling much, these choices affect that portion or area of the story but not much towards the ending. I've completed the game on my first playthrough within roughly 20hrs, minus all the afk and crash and completed almost all side quests. Combat/Skills/Stats/Crafting: Combat is action based not very fluid and flashy(it is a bit dull) but still passable and entertaining. Quite a limited Skill/Magic and Stats system, a far cry from other Dark Eye games and other "single character" RPGs. Again, nothing that really impressed me. Technically you can almost max them if you do grind the side quests. Crafting is very simple but kinda pointless, you don't really need the potions/buffs unless on higher difficulty. Graphics/Soundtrack: Looks more like a pre-2010 graphics, it looks somewhat dated therefore do not expect much on the looks of the surroudings, characters and world itself. Soundtrack is decent. Overall, i'd give it a 7/10. Plot and the backstory premise mainly the reason i play this game for.

Had some fun playing this game. + Worldbuilding is great + Skill system + Many choices, talent checks throughout the game - Fighting is a bit sloppy, would have loved more weapon variety as well - Poorly optimized - I think the real time fighting doesn't fit, would have loved a Drakensang turn-based system way more. All in all I would recommend this game if you are a DSA fan, but I favor Drakensang a lot more.

After playing other games from this developer like Mars War Logs, which I did enjoy, I fought through the negative feedback and thought, maybe this game just isnt for everyone! Unfortunately this game wasn't what I was hoping for. The fighting mechanics are slow, clunky and extremely repetitive. I probably could've played the game with a macro, 'swing, swing, swing...' The story was okay at best. It had nothing that excited or really made you want to play more thinking what's next? Frankly I'm shocked I played this game to completion, I dont recommend playing it as it might just sit in your library forever.

Full disclosure: I'm an avid PnP practitioner, including the Dark Eye myself, so if you dismiss my review as "cRPG nerd, no idea of the PnP stuff behind this game", that's your bad. And yeah, this game havily includes loads of PnP tropes. Sadly, it emphasizes the worse parts and goes easy on the good ones. Let's start with the most striking mistake. The topic of the game is blood magic which, in the DE (Dark Eye) universe is a huge deal. Really huge. Like wearing SS insignia and openly praising Hitler in post-war denazified Germany. Blood magic is really that evil. ...and in the game, it's just your ordinary seen-hundreds-of-times "Hit enemies to charge your adrenaline/anger/special/power/blood-bar to trigger special abilities". See what I did here? This mechanic is so ordinary, it has existed in several neigh-identical shapes throughout the years. They took what's a REALLY huge deal lore-wise and used a tried-and-true-not-huge-neither-creative-mechanic to represent that huge deal in the game. Reminds me on bad storytellers that say "The forest looks spooky" instead of describing how the trees look weird and seem to move, how the shadows look too dark for that time of day, you know, instead of building actual atmosphere. Just like bad storytellers say "The forest is spooky" and are done with it, this game says "Yeah, that's very evil" and is done with it. Why build atmosphere? This is, sadly, not the only example. All too often, this game just claims that something's dramatic and expects you to flip that switch in your brain instead of genuinely showing me how dramatic something is. An interesting example of this are traps. There are traps all over the place (normal RPG trope and good if done good), but to disarm them, you have to find a lever. Your character won't disarm the actual trap, your character can only pull a lever expecting me to feel like I'm disarming a trap because the game just told me that I did so, instead of showing me. There's not enough buildup either.
When you summon a demon or friggin' decide on the new bible for the evil church of all evil(tm)
, that stuff just happens. Again, those surely are huge deals in the DE universe, but why not make them feel hugely impressive in the game instead of telling me "Dis iz huge deal, now flip that switch in your brain to feel impressed". The next horrible PnP trope lies in the dialogs. Everyone in this game just loves hearing themselves talking. It's not like they had much to say, they just love to talk. Again, I know that from PnP as well, when I was about 14, I thought that stilted, puffy talk is how you roleplay. Well, it isn't. Not fun either, wasn't fun back then and it only got more boring during all those years. That plays nicely into the next horrible trope: Everyone and his grandma is always a friggin' expert on the game lore. Not few people I've played PnP with don't actually roleplay, they rather talk for what seems like an eternity about in-game-historical events or the whole world building stuff. It's fun occasionally or if the character in question is some clichee mage who just can't have a normal human conversation. But if it's pretty much everyone you meet, it gets stale quickly. On the other hand, there's lore thrown all over the place. In dialogs of course, but there's loads of stuff you can read in the world or look at famous people and trigger an interaction. None of this is particular interesting in of itself, instead, it leans heavily on the fanservice side of things. And that's what the game is, fanservice. It feels like some people really passionate about all this lore got together, but missed out on the parts that makes an actual game. It's not like there's no good gameplay to be had. There's a bit of exploration to be had, there's no open world area per se (which I very much salute), but the separate areas tend to be generally enjoyable and environmental puzzles every now and there spice things up. The combat isn't as tight as in, let's say, The Witcher 3, but there's still fun to be had. Still, they couldn't resist taking over the worst PnP tropes. Instead of giving you a basic set of combat maneuvers and letting you loose with improvising with them, it goes the lame road with giving you several of them but heavily scripted in what they do and don't. I know, that's the way many people play PnP, but that's a very lame way to play PnP. On the other hand, you get checks in dialogs (read: need to have high enough level in skill X). Those can throw some more lore (and bonus XP) at you, but they also can open quest doors. Not that there wouldn't have been another option to solve this particular encounter, but it's always nice to simply overpower my verbal adversary with a witty line. Speaking of witty lines, the story, as in "WHAT happens there" is pretty good and had they not buried it under heaps of empty speech, it would've been absolutely enjoyable. There are a few areas that you visit repeatedly during the story and they tend to have stuff that's impossible to get at first. A trap requiring a REALLY high skill to disarm it guarding a chest. At first, it's a WTF but later, it's a "Gotcha, lil' sucker". What's not so good, is the bonus XP you get from this stuff. In theory, getting bonus XP after disarming such a trap or winning a conversation is nice. In practice, that not-so-gently nudges you towards a particular play style, making other options present in-game disadvantegous effectively taking them away. A great thing about PnP is that you have all the options you want, at least in theory. I know that in practice, not few storytellers don't have the imagination to steer characters through while leaving the players freedom to actually roleplay and, even worse, when playing a pre-written story, storytellers tend to stick to the book letter-by-letter, requiring particular classes in the party. Again, a bad PnP trope. I know that things can be done differently from my own experience, when storytelling, I typically come up with the starter on the way and improvise everything else on-the-fly reacting to my players. I know I can't expect that level of freedom from a cRPG but there are cRPGs having better options than Demonicon that don't stem from the inherently limitless PnP background, Demonicon is losing on it's own home turf here. It's not like I didn't enjoy the game. It has it's good moments, partially good dialog, actually really story, pretty good gameplay, but all of this gets buried under bad PnP tropes. I admit, the game's worth it if fanservice is what you're after and you can ignore all the shortcomings. The fanservice is undeniably strong in Demonicon. But if you're after an actual game, there are better options. In terms of budget RPGs, Venetica springs to mind. It's largely similar, 3rd persion RPG with real-time combat and the-chosen-one special abilities, but the special abilities are integrated way better, the gameplay mechanics are better, the story is presented in a better way and Venetica is more charming overall. And let's not forget The Witcher series, always worth a recommendation! Cheap to get too.

As a longtime fan of the Dark Eye pen and paper rpg, I was intrigued when I heard about Demonicon. An action-rpg in the Black Lands, dealing with the legacy of Borbarad - sounds good, at least in theory. Let's see how it holds up: Liked: - the content is mature (little SPOILER: there is a budding incestous relationship between our main protagonists) - the gameplay is on average pretty smooth, barring a few hiccups - the setting has been almost painstakingly recreated and the details border on continuity porn (if you don't know what that is, look it up on tvtropes.org) - the story manages to pull you in and doesn't let up until the very end, with tough decisions, whose results you only see after a while, but for some there is always a third option depending on your skills -superb VA (at least in the german version, haven't tried the english yet; little spoiler: your father has the german voice of Liam Neeson) Disliked (well not actually disliked, but more puzzled by): - a couple of glitches in the graphics, nothing major or gamebreaking; I've seen a lot worse in AAA titles - something in the story progression that didn't make a lot of sense (SPOILER: you beat a powerful and annoying Rondrian and loot the armor from his corpse, only to be immediately offered a better demonic version by a demon - what's up with that?) Bottom line: IMO Demonicon felt like a somewhat quality-reduced clone of The Witcher 2, which is a superb game and thus Demonicon managed to be at least a good game. If you liked The Witcher 2 and you need to pass some time until The Witcher 3 arrives, then Demonicon is the game for you. If you're a fan of The Dark Eye, then Demonicon is also for you, since this is the only game besides Drakensang that made me feel like I was actually walking through Aventuria. Everybody else, it's up to you.

A bit rough on the edges and a bit buggy (various crashes here and there) but A FUN GAME nevertheless with very interesting story , and mature content. Vast variety of talents and skills, good UI, interesting battles. Its the old school classical RPG. I suggest to play it with an XBOX compatible gamepad for max fun. Graphics 6/10 Sounds 7/10 Gameplay 8/10 Story 9/10 Stability 6/10 Overall Fun 9/10

Noumena Studios is able to pull off a better BioWare game despite coming uncomfortably close to putting Baldur's Gate fanfiction of Imoen to code. Following The Dark Eye Pedigree to the letter, there is nothing about Demonicon that does not involve the likely foreign and confusing lore of Adventuria. Fortunately for the player, the key aspects of this game are immediately and consistently explained to the point that anyone could become an expert on Borbarrad and his teachings, whether or not they care to hunt down all the legends and specific conversation choices. The fact that they are able to successfully craft a compelling narrative out of Borbaradianism - that is a demonic mixture of two parts extreme Nietzchean philosophy, three pinches of Social Darwinism inspired ritualistic sacrifice and a whole helping of Objectivism, present your potential adversaries as more than just giggling maniac cultists. There is a real methodology to the evil or demon worshiping characters in this game that is as morally questionable as it is seductive; “Every man – A Mage” and the pursuit of freedom through the power of Blood Magic which often comes at the cost of enslaving and murdering others. Outside of the inexplicable charm of the story, there is a tight combat that is a comfortable blend of simple Action RPG slashing and spell flinging. Easy to pick up yet difficult to master, Demonicon is as pen and paper as you can get without scripted irritation from a wrathful DM. As for cons, however, this game has a strange sense of what should have the effort to be animated and what will be skipped over abruptly - to the point where I am always surprised whether I have high or lower expectations of what the game will do. It has difficulty keeping characters out of making the same arm folds or generic dramatic finger points for the 100th time, yet it has the depth to program taking a single bite out of an apple and then casually tossing it aside in order to anger the parents of starving children, if the player so chooses to be a Rear Admiral Dickbutt for one specific part of the early game. It is a lower budget indie RPG and I wouldn't have it any other way after experiencing it in all its flawed glory.
