I picked this up out of curiosity after I saw a comment on reddit saying how good the story and writing are. Surely this RPG-maker eroge game can't be THAT good, can it? A little over a week and 40 gameplay hours later, this is now one of my favorite RPGs ever. The writing and narrative lived up to the hype, the cast was excellent, the soundtrack was a banger, and the ending nearly had me in tears. This is not just a top-tier eroge game, this is a top-tier JRPG. If you like turn-based JRPGs, you should get this. Weakest points are probably gameplay (not bad but pretty standard turn-based RPG-maker stuff) and, funnily enough, the eroge. Also, make sure to get the patch from the Kagura Games website even if you don't wanna see 18+ scenes. It fixes a lot of stuff.

It's hands down one of the best RPGs I have ever played in my life. You can head in with high expectations and they will be met. Please give this game a try if you love JRPGs. I played NieR: Automata for the first time about a month ago and for a while I was scared. Scared that no games would be able to top it and to deeply touch me again. I was wrong... It's difficult to find the perfect words to describe how incredible Demons Roots was. You can feel all the passion the dev put into this world, this story and all its characters. Took me about 78 hours to complete, I was thorough. The world was big and varied, its maps filled with secrets. All the characters were loveable, especially the main protagonist. She is strong but you better be just as strong as her if you want to get through her moments of weakness. I don't wanna spoil anything so I won't talk in detail about the many companions you'll meet. Just know that they all interact with each other a LOT and that's something I really enjoy in these types of games. They all have their own quirks, goals and dreams and they all stayed relevant throughout the whole game. Music was great, there's quite a few bangers that I can't stop listening to on repeat now that I've finished the game. Combat was interesting to figure out. Normal encounters were bland but you can skip them (dodging enemies on maps), there's only random encounters in optional areas (they're not too long so it's fine). Many bosses were interesting and challenging. Game was overall decently easy but mostly because I think the main tank is incredibly strong, especially once you figure out how to build her. Lots of gear and accessories to find so min-maxing for the lategame stuff was enjoyable. And finally, the H-content. It's there. You'll have some during the main story but most of it is in two optional areas. Don't judge a book by its cover. I know this is a hentai RPG maker game and that it's a big turn off for many people but I assure you that if you can get past that, you'll discover an incredible story and RPG experience. A true hidden gem. The Steam reviews convinced me to give it a try and I am thankful to all of you who posted well written positive reviews. Thank you all for taking the time to write them and help me discover Demons Roots and thank you Akai Mato for making it. If my review manages to convince a single person to buy this game, I will be glad.

It's not even about the H scenes. If you ever played King Exit (by the same creators) before it was removed from steam, you know what I mean. The story of Demons Roots has far more character than even that masterpiece, now with the benefit of a good translation.

Demons Roots is an incredible statement that a powerful ending can redeem any kind of garbage, tropey, degenerate writing to cement itself as one of the greatest video game stories of all time. Most JRPGs have a dreadsome mid-game lull or, even worse, blow their load early and the final quarter turns into a slog. Demons Roots is in many ways a stunning counterexample, not the least of which because the game absolutely betrayed my early expectations. There is no praise strong enough to emphasize how good the pacing is here. I loved the first couple dozen hours, I really did, but political intrigue withstanding, it was evident to me this story was riding its tropes and nonsensical eroge twists into the ground. Dumb party members will reveal everything to an antagonist because anime bullshit; the script waylays you with tomfoolery like "hot guys really think they can get away with anything." Early Demons Roots is riddled with Jappojank and the tropey characters that propel it along. And it's all a fucking ruse, because as the game unfolds, the one-dimensional characters reveal little shades of nuance. The script, keenly self-aware, makes fun of itself. And this rich, harrowing political drama about war and racism absolutely *explodes* with intrigue, betrayal, death, twists, and delicate, deliberate writing that redeems all prior plot conveniences. One guy wrote this is "Game of Thrones if Game of Thrones was good" and there is two things I know: I'm tired of all political dramas being compared to Game of Thrones, and I fucking love Game of Thrones. Yet as I crawled through chapter 4, the similarities between these two stories became uncanny. At the heart of it is a tragic and heartcrushingly human story about the tolls of war. Humanity is motivated by a shared hatred of some nebulous other; "us" vs "them" mentality; can we accept and learn to cohabitate with this inherently evil "other," demons vs humans, humans vs demons, disparate peoples desperately trying to cohabitate when propaganda, tradition, and their own cultures demand them to hate each other? A single human may forgive, but can an entire culture? This theme carries the game to its final heartbeat, explosive revelation after explosive revelation, culminating in an immensely powerful ending occupying my very first thoughts as I woke up this morning. By the end of it all, this disparate and distinctly eroge cast of bikini-clad, isekai'd, crossdressing, freeuse mages, equal parts insufferable and adorable, evolved into one of JRPG's most nuanced, poignant casts, and it happened so subtly I hadn't even realized how attached I was to these characters. This is not faint praise. I find most JRPG casts merely "acceptable." The Xenoblade series, Tales, many Final Fantasies... some of them have characters I love, but mostly I find casts as a whole exist to shade the plot. Demons Roots deftly balances both; I would not care for the world's plights were it not for its cast, and I wouldn't care for cast were it not for the cursed world they inherited. All of the game's flaws can be summarized neatly by the RPG Maker design limitations. The smut is (mostly) lame. The traditional, turn-based combat is pulled straight from 1994, and even JRPGs from that era have more cinematic presentation than Demons Roots. This is indisputably the lowest budget, most obviously JRPG Maker JRPG I've ever played. There are other indie JRPGs coming out this decade with better production; Astlibra and Chained Echoes immediately spring to mind. I know, I know; I hate people who bitch about graphics as much as anyone else might, but video games are just as much a visual art as they are a musical and written art, and Demons Roots is, visually, absurdly boring. I do love the music, though. This soundtrack bops. It's dynamic and eclectic, rich with chiptunes, orchestral, chamber music, metal, and it all just works. Exploration is rote; towns exist, but there's not much to them, and the only real reason to explore them is to indulge in flashes of interaction with side characters that might miss integral character shades otherwise. Dungeons are stylistically the same boring isometric dungeons you've seen in any other SNES JRPG. The saving grace is that lootable objects are everywhere, with numerous hidden trails; scouring them is the primary means of obtaining new equipment, so exploration is rewarded and almost mandatory if you don't want to grind your ass out of more challenging boss encounters. The combat design carefully navigates around the genre's common pitfalls: every character is good, some a bit more than others, but they all have their moments; debuffs are consistently useful, including in boss fights, and often mandatory; party members can be swapped in and out without wasting a turn; and encounter design is usually just complex enough you can't X-mash your way to victory. For an RPG Maker game, everything was designed with as much of a modern touch as possible, but there's no getting around the limitations of its system. I'd be overwilling to overlook all of the game's flaws if it had an even somewhat exciting progression system. Earn EXP and level your characters linearly? Literally 1994. I was prepared to write a frustrated diatribe about all the praise this game is getting from the select few willing to overlook it's an eroge and play it """for the plot"""; at minimum, I was certain everyone praising the shit out of this game just happened to be among the small herd of weirdos that love goofball anime comedy and Jappojank storytelling (fucking shounen lovers), and there's no way Demons Roots would appeal to anyone else. Well, I was wrong. If you, like me, find yourself slightly disillusioned in the early hours thinking you got jebaited by a bunch of trolls voting "Pingu in the City" to MyAnimeList's top anime charts, press on, because every hour is better than the last. After spending the early year balls deep in Astlibra, these two games make clear the indie JRPG scene is where the most insane, off-the-wall design is going to happen, and I hope to see these games get more mainstream attention. I'll close this with a final thought: Deathpolca is the greatest JRPG protagonist of all time.

Imagine randomly "acquiring" an H-rpgmaker game expecting to have a rub or two and then ending up with one of the best if not the best JRPG you've played. That's exactly what happened with me and I'd never forgive myself if I didn't buy it just to support the developers. I'm not even finished with the game yet but I've already enjoyed this more than my old favorite JRPGs like Final fantasy 7 and 9. If I can convince at least even one person to try this game then I've done my part. Strong setting, characters and soundtrack and specially story. EDIT:// I've finished the game. Honest contender for my game of the year. You did everything you could. Have a good rest and enjoy the world you've fought so hard for with the princess. Note:// Steam version seems to be censored and has some free(?) items that you shouldn't have when you start according to some reviews. Check for other ways to buy/acquire uncensored ver/patch.

(ignore playtime, i originally got it on another platform and went to buy it on steam out of respect) Demon roots is an rpgmaker game. It's also the best game i've played in years. -Gameplay wise it's pretty classic rpgmaker, turn based combat, top down view all that. On the other hand every map is detailed and full of secrets and treasures to find, and the fact i never once got lost despite having a god awful sense of direction is a testament to how good the level design is at guiding you. -the art is great, and the maps often have quite a lot of original assets and images used to make them look better and more unique, this makes demon roots prolly one of the prettiest rpgmaker games i've ever played. Same goes for CGs, be they 18+ or not they all look really good. -The music is absolutely amazing, and is used perfectly, there's never a scene where you go "hold up this feels out of place" -The 18+ content is really limited so if you want a porn game this ain't it chief, what's there i feel is mainly good at reinforcing the themes of the story rather than anything else and then there's the story --Spoiler free-- Demon roots' story is amazing, one of the best things i've had the pleasure of experiencing in many years. You play as deathpolca, a petite demon girl with amnesia who'd been spying on the human world for a century or so to prepare for the demon's invasion as a response to their world dying. Over the course of the story you find yourself joined by 6 other characters, and every single one of them feels unique, they all have their own unique personality, goals, motivations, fears, traumas, sense of humor etc... essentially, they genuinely feel like actual people and this applies to almost every single character in the game, protagonist or not. As the story goes, you see more and more of the world of demon roots and boy is there certainly a lot to see, every area feels different from the last with it's own atmosphere and culture, one day you'll be fighting in a wasteland full of barbarians who enjoy torturing people for fun, the next you'll be in a massive merchant city planning a coup d'état The story has 5 chapters + a side story, though there's a twist here that i won't spoil ---SPOILERS FROM HERE--- The characters are actually really quite deep, let's take the main protagonist Deathpolca for example, though she acts like a dominant uncaring demon it's immediatly clear she doesn't want the war. Polca isn't a warmonger, she's simply terribly afraid of being left alone and that fear drives everything she does, she hides it due to her leadership role in the demon army requiring her to put up a strong front, but the mask breaks rapidly, especially when people she cares about become hurt and ESPECIALLY towards the middle of the game during the berserker drug incident in which she's forced to kill demons she developped a close bond with. And this applies to every character they all get their own personal traumas and fears, and they all get their own arcs that allows them to keep moving despite those; ange hates herself for being too weak to protect her queen so she becomes an unbreakable shield, sarasa spent her entire life imprisoned, dreaming of travelling the world but refuses to abandon her fellow students, diana joined the demons in hope of being able to kill her father again despite the fact that deep down she knows if she met him face to face she wouldn't be able to pull that trigger due to the close bond they shared when she was young i'll stop here to not analyze all the characters but i could go deeper on all of them. Characters aside, the story is centered around slavery and the reasons for it are actually somewhat justified, it's not painted as something good but the game does make sure you understand why the empire would do such a thing, namely to keep humanity from destroying itself through wars. Interestingly here, i find the h scene to, while personally not my fetish in the slightest, really reinforce the world building, they actually show what happens to slaves that disobey and give you good reasons to avoid a bad end. Interestingly enough you actually get a chance to physically destroy the place said bad end takes place in later in the story, which i have to say i've never seen in a game before but it's a very neat touch --SPOILERS END-- In the end demon roots, though not perfect in every possible way, isn't an h game, it's a story first, and that story takes priority over everything else, but it's done in such a way that i find myself enjoying even the less refined parts like the combat simply because the story makes it interesting, it gives you reasons to fight hard and be invested. In fact i feel like if this game was in any other engine it wouldn't work as well, cause rpgmaker lets you use your own imagination to add to the action given it's limitations 10/10, genuinely the best game i've played in years

The porn is bad. Really bad. Just enable R-18 skip and do not looks back. This is an *amazing* RPG and a terrific time. Content warning for heavy sexual abuse, even with R-18 skip, but if you can tolerate that this is *EXTREMELY* worth your time. EDIT: After beating the game I cried for two hours because I was so overwhelmed with emotions about the ending. 11/10

First off I would just state out right that this game is amazing and one of the best JRPGs I ever played. I would also say this is easily one of the big 3 of best JRPGs in story up there with both MGQ/MGQ:Paradox and the Black Souls series.I bought this game when it was 20% off and honestly this game is still worth buying at full price or even if it was 25-30$ it would still be a good price for this game. Keep in mind you need to get the patch from the Kagura Games website to experience the games full potential and restore everything. So it took me exactly 50 hours to beat this game and it was quite the experience. The cast was great and all the main characters were incredibly likable. The music was great and was masterfully played at perfect times to increase the dramatic effect of scenes and fights. (Plan on editing and adding way more want to put this up so I dont procrastinate to death also note the dev on her CI-EN page said Dlsite will translate King Exit to english when the chinese translation for it is done since i've seen a lot of people wanting King Exit)
