Powered by the new Enfusion engine, Arma Reforger lets you fight for supremacy over 51 km2 of incredible island terrain in an authentic Cold War setting, or create unique scenarios in real-time with the Game Master curation mode. Return to Everon, the war-driven microstate from the hit game that started it all, Arma: Cold War Assault.

Everon

Return to Everon, a 51 km² mid-Atlantic island in the Malden archipelago. Revisit familiar locales from Operation Flashpoint and revel in the natural beauty of a massive open-world; a stunning landscape of pine and broadleaf forests, flowing rivers, ponds, idyllic towns, and austere mountains, surrounded by pebble beaches and rocky coastlines.

Arland

Capture new ground and explore the remote, overseas territory of Arland; a small, 10 km² island belonging to the microstate of Everon. Situated with its mother state in the mid-Atlantic, it occupies a strategic Cold War faultline and is well-known for its military airbase, leased to the Soviet Union.

Conflict

    TL;DR

Full review belowNot Arma 4, just an engine test/preview. Arma 4 will be a completely separate release and purchase when that releases around 2024. • Not worth full price at current state, unless you wish to support devs or utilize developer tools. • Contains three playable game types: PvP Capture Points, Zeus Game Master, and a tutorial. • Runs relatively smoothly albeit not without its fair share of bugs and quirks. • Uses a context menu (similar to DayZ) that replaces the old scroll wheel interaction menu. But also has console-orientated UI elements that are bad for PC. • Graphics are a major improvement over previous installment. • Is supported by BI's new addon workshop instead of the Steam workshop used by Arma 3.

    What exactly is Arma Reforger?

It's important to note, that this is not Arma 4, or even a standalone game. This is simply a tech demo/testing platform for the Enfusion engine for Arma 4, which is estimated to release by 2025. As such, Reforger is fairly bare-bones content-wise. Currently, all that is included is a PvP game mode that is somewhat similar to Squad, and a simple "Zeus Game Master" game mode that allows for custom-made PvP/Coop scenarios. This is all on the one map, Everon, the remake of the Operation Flashpoint map. Also included is the Enfusion Dedicated Server for server hosts and the Arma Reforger Tools.

    Is it worth getting?

The current price IMO is too high to make it worth purchasing, unless you're an avid Arma fan and want to track the future of Arma and support the devs, or you're planning to use the Arma Reforger Tools to get into development. But if you're thinking of getting this just for something to play, it'd be more worth it to buy Squad or Arma 3. The only reason for my up-vote is for the extensive toolset provided to allow addon makers to develop and test mods that will eventually seen in Arma 4. There is a workshop supported by Bohemia Interactive's custom-made addon workshop, and once community content is developed this game may be more worth the price. However, in its current state, it does not contain a lot (3 factions with weapons, equipment, structures, cars, and one APC). On top of that, the custom scenario "Zeus Game Master" game mode lacks much of the same level of control that was found in Arma 3's ZGM. You can place units, waypoints, objects, spawns, and objectives, but that's about it. You can't edit AIs' skills, behavior, or gear, nor can AI drive vehicles. Many of the modules found in A3's ZGM are missing as well, leaving scenario control to just the players' faction, weather, and time of day. This follows a series of other disappointing changes there likely made to support console players, and I personally hope this trend doesn't continue into Arma 4.

How is the performance? Is Arma finally optimized??

This is a good question but hard to answer personally. The best I can say is it performs quite similarly to DayZ. I will say it seems large numbers of AI and players fortunately aren't as laggy as was the case in Arma 3, but it's not the +100% FPS some people were hoping for. I estimate Arma 4 will still require a modern build of that time. Hopefully, someone will come out with extensive tests, but from my current playtime so far, I can say it runs decently smooth. As for stability, there is a noticeable improvement in movement, interactions, and animations, but there is still plenty of janky-ness in other places that's expected for an Arma title. On top of that, I've personally experienced a couple of crashes/frame drops during my playtesting, but that is expected considering the current Alpha state of the game. The AI themselves have been improved somewhat. Although they lack any in-depth control over behaviors, they at least do a better job or reacting and engaging in contact. I'm fairly certain they will be dramatically overhauled before Arma 4 is released.

    Misc Ratings

Graphics: 8/10 • Performance: 7/10 • Gameplay: 4/10 • Stability: 6/10 • Most impressive: Visuals are stunning (e.g. dynamic lights raycasting, cloud shadows, HD textures, distant models). • Most disappointing: Console-favored interface design. Reminiscent of the vanilla Skyrim UI, especially with the Zeus interface. As Arma Reforger continues to update, I will update this review.

BE AWARE This is not Arma 4 This will not get you a discount on Arma 4 Currently only 12 months of support is planned This is just a MP demo bundled with development tools to allow modders the chance to port their content to the new engine prior to Arma 4. Having said that this is early yet but it feels like a larger step up from Arma 2 to 3 in a positive way while still being Arma. Gone is the scroll wheel menu all hail contextual interactions. I'm excited for the future of Arma based on this. Just wanted to help people know what they are getting. I'm sure your favorite content creator will shortly have a video to go into more details.

You don't play this to play Arma 4, you play this to make sure Arma 4 becomes what we want it to become. Remember the purpose of Reforger before you rage at your inability to read and comprehend what making an entirely new engine means, they have to start from scratch and they need our help, stay positive and constructive with your words so they know what you want.

THIS IS NOT ARMA 4! AND I HATE TO HAVE TO MENTION, ITS A WORK IN PROGRESS, OF COURSE THERE ARE GOING TO BE BUGS! Apparently other most negative reviews cannot comprehend their own stupid. What it is, is an INCREDIBLY exciting look at what the future of the series is going to be. With a plethora of amazing new features such as the new version of the Infusion engine which is miles ahead of the Real Virtuality engine that the previous ARMA games ran on. It looks incredible, runs really well and supports SO MUCH MORE. Visually it looks amazing with beautiful lighting, particle effects, distant shadows and so much more. From just the current state of the game, which whilst currently barebones (which Bohemia already told us) it shows features we ARMA veterans have been dying for, for years. Fluid movement speed and stance adjusting (think Tarkov). More realistic firearms handling such as different reloading states (akin to Insurgency), not to mention round in chamber accounting finally! We have climbing, melee, animated (and IN HANDS) map, compass, bandages. Not to mention hand and vest mounted flashlights! Picture in picture scopes are now supported in gorgeous detail. Driving is also huuugely improved! Terrain has never looked so good as it does here for previous ARMA entries. Micro terrain is finally able to be achieved and things like creeks, rivers and streams that properly flow are present. Buildings are fully furnished and detailed which gives massively more believable environments! Weather also looks great! Gear also is a big change here! We now have tops, trousers and boots as separate items (with gloves and eyewear, etc hopefully on the way). Clothing now gets visually wet when it rains or when you go into water. Another MASSIVE, and I truly mean massive feature is vests (or webbing at the moment) are made up of individual pouches which have their own storage spaces. Currently there is a very rough UI so changing pouches isn't easy but the fact that it is there is huge. No more need to have duplicates of items in the arsenal for different variations of vests/webbing. The opportunities this will give modders is tremendous. The biggest feature that comes with this game/test platform is the modding tools. In comparison to the tools that had to be used for previous titles in the ARMA series, we now have full modern editing tools that are EXTREMELY powerful. These reviews that are blanketly saying "its squad" or "its too arcadey" are just pure bullshit. We are seeing more depth than we ever had in an ARMA game. Don't fear that its on consoles either, DayZ already showed that the game can remain the same when ported (although AI have yet to be tested) but even if they cannot work the same as PC, there has been no word on if ARMA 4 will even have a console release. Its being evaluated with this game no doubt. Yes it is missing features and content from ARMA 3. NO IT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARENT COMING like some reviews seem to postulate. Its a new engine with an entirely new coding language. They cannot just copy paste over from ARMA 3. Besides with the new animation system, things like weapon resting/bipods will be able to be done so much better. The future for the ARMA series is ridiculously promising and exciting. If you can, buy the game and support Bohemia. They fully deserve it! But don't just read my review and form an opinion. Try the game and think about what these new features and additions mean for the future and how modders will be able to also use them and create amazing things. Stay frosty!

This is the most ArmA ArmA of all time. The hit you get when the game works right is stronger than ever, and it has never been harder to get that hit. In nearly 10 hours, I experienced a solid 15-20 minutes of the best tactical shooter I'd ever played, and over 9 hours of kitting up, driving to the objective, and then having my game crash or randomly get disconnected. 10/10.

Arma Reforger is a testbed, a stepping stone on the way to Arma 4. Why should or shouldn't you buy it? You should buy it if: - You want to become part of the development process (think alpha tester but you get to keep whatever the game ends up being, hence the price tag). - You have played previous games in the Arma series, this is not yet a game for newcomers to the series, besides you won't really appreciate it as much without prior exposure to Arma. - You are feeling adventurous and want to get in early to what may potentially become a great entry in the series. - You feel nostalgic about Everon. You should NOT buy it if: - Incomplete games bother you. - You have little interest in the Arma series as a whole. - You want a more arcade experience, to put it lightly, this game will not tell you where you are on the map, enemies are difficult to see because of effective camo and improved shadow render distances. - You don't like walking for 10 minutes only to get shot (or more likely crash as of now) The game does have technical problems currently which makes multiplayer unsuitable for serious play, so I wouldn't suggest buying this to play with a friend. All things considered, if you love Arma and have been wanting a glimpse of another sequel, buy it. I will keep this review updated as time goes on to reflect the current state of the game. - Update 1 It has been a while, not as much content updates have happened as I would have liked, it's hard to say what the devs are busy with at the moment since it could be that they are working on the backend rather than new content, which I would respect. Modders though are definitely warming up to the game, some interesting projects have popped up and it seems like we could be seeing more mods coming in, but there's still issues with the base game which seems to have caused lower server population and while mods could help in this aspect, I think the game needs to work on its core gamemode a bit more, there's not a lot here, but if the little bit that is there is good quality and fun, then I can imagine seeing higher server population.

Like lots of people said here, if you are a ArmA veteran, definetely is worthy to check it out, but be aware, its very buggy, will crash a lot and you probably gonna have problems in the multiplayer. The flow have changed a lot, instead of terrain being your constant enemy now you wont get stuck on random stuff anymore, i felt more focused on whats happening than worried about small things. Imersion have changed too, something about small details bring the life in it, instead of hovering gunners, now they do side steps, for example i really missed pulling the grenade pin and holding in my hand like in arma II, now its back. The new inventory feels fresh and well designed, seems inspired by man of war rts game. What to expect from this new branch of the ArmA series is, feels like a ArmA game that have been modded with ACE with a basic medical system, RHS, JSRS and TASKFORCE RADIO. Really feels like the devs noticed this mods as essential ending making into the game by default with a more optimized. Do i recommend it? Totally, but mind this will feel more like a sandbox to experiment with stuff rather than the serious gameplay everyone is waiting impatiently.

    The good

The engine. The gunplay. The movement. The tools. Compared to Arma 3, Reforger is vastly superior in these specific aspects by far: Gone are the days of wishing for Arma to run at a consistent +60 FPS even with intense firefights happening in the background. Performance-wise, you're no longer bottlenecked by your CPU's IPC + RAM latency and are only held back by your GPU (though obviously Reforger still benefits from a fast CPU/RAM combo). Even though Reforger's Enfusion engine is obviously still undergoing development, what it has now is wonderful by Arma standards. For weapons, recoil is handled much better and so many small mechanical details missing from previous games like having +1 round in the chamber, partial reload animations, etc. are all great improvements that the series sorely needed. Let's not forget how you can carry more than one primary weapon and have properly disposable shoulder-fired launchers (amongst numerous other excellent additions). When it comes to movement, you're no longer controlling a tank on legs that awkwardly transitions between different poses or gets wounded from sprinting off a staircase. Even something as simple as being able to leap over small fences, climb up objects, or adjust your movement speed on the fly with the mouse's scrollwheel is great. Lastly, the Enfusion Workbench is a delight to use as opposed to the Frankenstein-like Arma 3's Tools which were, to put it simply, a bunch of loose programs held together by sticky tape. While it's complex compared to modding in older games, it's yet another welcome addition to the series.

    The bad

Reforger has...questionable changes to the UI that are clearly catered to support XBOX controllers. Don't get me wrong. Things like introducing a generic one-button interaction key and getting rid of the archaic scrollwheel Action Menu from previous games is a sorely welcome change. As is the streamlining of movement along with a whole host of other actions which previously (and rather unnecessarily) required their own keybind. However, the rest of the interface for things like the Game Master menus (Reforger's equivalent of Arma 3's Zeus) take up way too much real estate on the screen and are a clearly a step back. This even extends to the inventory system which would be suitable for a survival game like DayZ but not so much for Arma. Its current design is unintuitive and lacks clarity when compared to Arma 3's far more straightforward inventory. As for content, Reforger is very light on playable assets and scenarios. It's not really a sandbox in its current state since the main factions don't even have a full roster of weapons, vehicles and equipment. Even with the three promised milestones (Ground Support/Air Assault/Final Strike), Reforger will remain lacklustre at best a year down the line once it leaves early access. It won't even come close to the amount (nor variety) that Arma 3 had to offer at launch. To further compound this issue, there is no mission editor so you can't even create your own scenarios in-game. What does that mean? No 2D editor. No 3DEN. All you have is Game Master with its clunky interface...which is not even close to being a replacement. As such, you have to resort to using the (far more complex) Enfusion Workbench...which would be ok if you're a modder but not if you just want to create a simple mission and have no interest in modding.

    The ugly

"Session Error" I think this error message just about sums up Reforger in a nutshell. It's a multiplayer-centric game that doesn't even work the majority of the time without kicking you back to the main menu a few seconds, minutes or even an hour into a match (if you're lucky). Normally this would not be a problem as you can just not play MP and stick to singleplayer. However, going back to my previous points about the lack of playable content and a mission editor, you don't have that option in Reforger. It's MP or nothing since SP is really not a thing in Reforger. Which leaves the question as to why BI decided to adopt this approach and how BI somehow managed to let such a critical issue get past their QA...

    Conclusion

If you are interested in modding and want to prepare your skills for Arma 4, then get Reforger as the Workbench and everything the platform already has to offer is well worth it. If you are looking for an Arma game that has a functioning sandbox, then Reforger is not for you. Even for old school Arma fans, the lack of core Arma features makes Reforger a very questionable purchase. As such, you're better off sticking to Arma 3 or remaining patient and wait for Arma 4. Reforger's lack of content, the disconnection issues, the strange design decisions...all of this just makes it not worth the purchase in its current state. Should you still insist on getting Reforger, be prepared for the mess that you'll be stumbling into, and accept that it's not so much a game but rather a playable tech demo (at best).
