About the Game

A great deity created the world named Engardin, leaving four goliaths before her departure. The Goliaths abided by their different divine callings and upheld the order and flow of this world. Hence, the lives in Engardin reincarnated and multiplied.

Humans were the last creation, and their ever-expanding ambitions led to a protracted war against the Goliaths. Engardin was engulfed in flames, until a huge explosion known as "The Razing" devastated the Holy Grounds of mankind and brought a swift end to the conflict. But the divine order was broken, and lives withered away. The age of mankind came to an end.

The survivors of the conflict scattered across Engardin. Severed from the Well of Mankind and unable to reincarnate, they banded together to form settlements. Years have passed since this great cataclysm, and the remaining human settlements have been suddenly assaulted by mystic forces. Renee, a young amnesiac girl and student of Aros, was the lone survivor of the attack on her village. Determined to recover her forgotten memories and locate her lost mentor, she bids farewell to her destroyed village to embark on a journey that will inexplicably set into motion a series of events that will determine the fate of this new world.

I am just getting started with the game, but I am liking it quite a lot so I am giving it a thumbs up from the get-go. Edit: if the game seems to have low review score is becase for some reason people in asia are leaving negative reviews. It is a mistery to me why they are doing that, the game is good, if you like metroidvanias you will like this one. Good - The art is amazing. - The music is great. - So far combat is good, the controls are good, and you get a forward dash early on, i liked that. - There is a bit of weapon variety, I have now a sword, a whip, a great sword and a scythe. I am a bit hammer fan, i doubt i will find one in this game, be nice though. - You have a selection of 3 languages for the voicing, English, Japanese and Chinese. - This is a huge plus for me: Renee does not talk stupid crap every time you press a button, I wholeheartedly loathe that recent practice in games to make characters talk your ears off with regarded, cringy voice lines. Thanks a lot Aurogon for not doing that crap. - UltraWide support out of the box! Bad: - Talent tree is a bit confusing, takes a while to get used to it. - I have a bunch of items that their descriptions are just lore, not what they actually do if I use them

It's alright but falls short of expectations

Chinese people bombing it with negative reviews for no reason to be honest. Yes. There are no iframes, meaning the dodge is basically useless outside of keeping your distance and travelling faster. But not every Metroidvania game has / had a dodge that let you phase through targets. It's a vibrant looking game that functions well, just gotta get used to the inability to dash through enemies like you have been accustom to with recent titles. It's annoying that's about it. We, the players, have unlocked the sites. We should be able to teleport from one location to another at will, without the need for this inconvenient "mechanic" called a resting potion. If you enjoy running through areas for up to 20 minutes and more to get to NPCs to complete quests and doing the same thing over and over as you progress deeper and further through the game with even longer gaps in how far you need to travel to backtrack to town, then this game is for you. I and a lot of other people have given up trying to put up with this feature. The further you progress into the game, the more monotone the game becomes, the more boring the bosses become. It's so unrewarding and tedious. There are plenty of better games.

Just popping my review in to balance out some of the silly ones. The game's pretty, the combat feels responsive and fluid, the weapon types are neat. I'd recommend anyone who liked Ori, Dust an Elysian Tail, or Hollow Knight to try it. Positives: - Combat is fluid, responsive and fun, you can even deflect projectiles back at enemies. - Decent weapon variety and you can wield two at once like in Ori. - The map is huge, lots of places to explore. - The artstyle is gorgeous, the enemy and boss designs are neat, all around good looking game. - The music is good, it's not going to stick in your head like Ori's did but it's doing its job and it's doing it well. - The story is there, it's pretty standard for a Metroidvania plot, it works and I'm not here for plot anyway. I do have some gripes though but I don't think they take away from the experience enough to not recommend though they might detract someone from buying it: -Resource-based fast travel is pretty cumbersome, especially with how distant each "bonfire" is, these resources are limited and can't be bought, meaning you have a finite number of fast travels. UPDATE: You can buy the potions to fast-travel anywhere now! -Healing is relegated to relatively rare potions, or the innate heal your character gets from the getgo, but she only gets additional ones later on, quite a bit later on too, meaning you have whatever potions you find +1 heal and only the innate heal restores on death. You have a magic bar, but you don't get a healing spell at least as far as I've gotten. UPDATE: Mentioned above but consumables can be bought now for relatively cheap. -Some enemy animations are pretty ambiguous making you guess where or how to dodge. Not a big deal once you have mobility abilities but early it can be troublesome. -The game doesn't seem to recognise certain inputs (down+attack, jump+attack) at times it's supposed to like for extending jumps. I'm sure it's an issue that can be patched out so it's not that big a deal. UPDATE!: That was a slight translation error as I thought. -The voice acting and dialogue/translation are pretty rough in some spots, if you're like me though that doesn't matter you're in it for the gameplay. -The menu transitions and transitions to the title screen are pretty long. It takes 5 seconds or so to get back to the Load File screen, not a problem normally but if you're speedrunning it can be. On launch it takes about half a minute to get to the title screen as well. If you played any of the inspirations this game has then you kinda know what to expect, it's relatively by the numbers on that end but it's pretty good for what it is, aside from those complaints. Lol. Edit: I play games like this on my Deck which is offline most of the time to save battery so my playtime is weird. Edit 2: The latest patch fixed or cleared upmy major gripes with the game, I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Helping balance the review bombing, this is a excellent game reminiscent of classic Metriodvanias like SotN. I think people forgot the gameplay that founded this genre and made it great before it was over saturated. Really enjoying this game!

a really great metroidvania overall. the issue of fast travel being limited is only for the first couple hours. THERE IS A SOMEWHAT HIDDEN ITEM FOR PERMANENT TRAVEL. flower of confluence is on a island in the south once you get access to the map travel.

Since I'm about to complete all the achievements I'm going to edit my review. First of all I played this game mostly vanilla and so all the quality of life improvements I didn't get until I was nearing the end of everything. This game is massive. This game is one of the best metroidvanias out there. It starts a little slow and confusing but once you get the double jump and wall jump, the game basically opens up entirely. The map is really big and there's so much stuff to collect. The enemy variety is great and so are all the bosses. There's very few re-skinned enemies and bosses and they usually are changed up enough to feel like a different fight. The visuals are great and the controls are very responsive. The combat is fluid and every weapon type is unique with strengths and weaknesses. Because there is contact damage, the longer ranged weapons can be nice but they are slower. The skill tree adds new moves to weapons that really makes using them a lot different. There is a parry tied to the great sword and you get an i-frame dash later in the game as well. The combat is very fluid and even though there is a level up system, your strength mostly comes from gear. This means you can access high level areas and get better gear. I never felt like I had to grind levels. The most difficult part of the game is the npc quest lines. This would probably be my only con. It's hard to keep track of them and knowing where they move to is very challenging. Reminded me of vanilla Elden Ring or some old school games. Sometimes there are little to no clues. You will do a lot of back tracking recovering treasures as you unlock new movement options so I ran into a lot of them that way. All in all this is an extremely fun game and well worth the money. There are many different endings and a NG+ but its more of like an epilogue with chapters that allows you to unlock the true ending of the main game. You are never locked out of content and once you unlock an ending you can load up your save file and keep exploring or try another ending.

Easily one of the best metroidvanias together with Aeterna Noctis and Hollow Knight.

Now that I have finally beaten the base game I can leave a review of it. First, I want to address some of the comments that I have read bashing on the game. Fast Travel: Before the patch there were a LOT of comments and reviews that called this game terrible because there was no fast travel system or that the fast travel was a consumable item. This really bothered me because after a solid play through, much like in Dark Souls 1, you do unlock fast travel between main points. No i-frames on dash so combat is bad and useless: Again, if they put in some actual hours into the game itself the ability to have i-frames on dash becomes unlocked. However, I can see why this would be upsetting for people. Those are two of the bigger ones that I have seen and the game addresses them. However, I do think they are valid criticisms that people have voiced even if I do not agree with it. I found myself plenty engrossed in the game and it took me around 45 hours to beat the base game. The Good: First, the art is awesome! Each area feels completely unique and enemies are very unique for the areas that they are in. You can go from very fantastical, to horror, to sci-fi futuristic all in one play through and to be completely honest. I loved the themes that were there in the game and nothing really felt out of place. It only made you ask yourself, "Why?" That sense of wonder is really what kept pushing me forward in the game. And I felt truly immersed in the world that these developers gave me. It's been a long while since I have felt this good about taking my time exploring a map and feeling rewarded for doing so. Combat feels excellent once you find something that works for you. I have spoken with many people in the community who use different combination of weapons and I think that is a really well thought out design. For me personally, I loved using the Scythe and Whip combo. And for super speedy bosses I would switch up to Dual Blades to get in and do some quick damage. It's responsive and it feels really good to play. Bosses are really fun! Sure there are probably some bosses that were really easy. But some of these later game bosses are clearly inspired from a lot of souls games. If I had to describe one of the final bosses, it was a perfect blend of Orphan of Kos + Malenia, Blade of Miquella. Encourages you to be highly aggressive and learning to master all of the mechanics you have learned in order to get past a huge challenge. If you really like fast paced aggressive combat then this takes care of that itch. The Skills on the weapons are very cool! I can't go too much into detail about them without giving spoilers away. But the animations are beautiful, the damage is worth it, and once you learn how to master the timing of the skills it can feel REALLY good to execute one on a boss and watch a good chunk of it's health evaporate before you eyes. Honestly people complaining about the skills and getting hit simply haven't tried to even master it. It's High Risk High Reward. Now for some mixed thoughts: Story wise it has been all over the place. It definitely attempts to take the souls format of telling a story with a mix of linear telling but you find yourself questioning at the beginning who are the bad guys up until the very end where you finally figure out who you are fighting. For now, it just seems like you are going around killing everything because it is there. The story does start to piece itself together at the end of the game. Again, there are some really interesting sci-fi elements that go into it but it's really well thought out and put together. But I do think the story is arguably the weakest part of the game. Now for some bad thoughts: The game lulls you into a false sense of, "This game is too easy." For the first 1/3 of the game. The rest of the game the difficulty scale jumps into souls level of difficulty. I will say, if you are not a fan of souls bosses and having to learn mechanics of the boss in order to master it then I will say this game is not for you. The difficulty does not only apply to bosses however, it also applies to the normal enemies around you who start hitting like trucks. Progression is NOT clear at all. It took me almost a whole day of back tracking everywhere that I had been to find how to progress the next 1/3 of the game. There are many areas that you will encounter that scream, "I really shouldn't be here." But if you are like me, stubborn, you will try to progress on anyways only to encounter a wall that you cannot progress through without a certain skill. Which that skill may or may not be locked behind a boss that is clearly not meant to be beaten yet. This one is personal but there is a skill you eventually unlock that allows you to jump on enemies and get higher. The platforming they designed for the areas is really fun and gives you that Hollow Knight/Celeste feel of overcoming an obstacle. However, that ability is programming to Down + Jump and it is the most obnoxious thing I have encountered. There are many times where I have witnessed the input lag simply eat my inputs and I would fail the jump only to get sent right back to the starting point. It got so bad I had to program a hot key on my Steam Deck in order to execute the skill perfectly every time. And if you played many metroidvania games you will often find yourself accidentally mashing Down + Jump in order to slide on the ground but find that does nothing because it is Down + RT. TL;DR: I highly recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a metroidvania fix with a mix of Hollow Knight, Celeste, and Souls all in one game. And to be fair, 45 hours for the price of $25 is more than worth the money I spent on the game. It is a lot of fun, beautifully crafted, and well thought out. There are some bad things, such as difficulty scaling ramping up too quickly and lack of direction. But the pros of this game far outweigh the cons and I think it's well worth the buy if you are curious about it!

I liked it in the beginning and I still do 12 hours later, but I got to a point where the difficulty ramped up like crazy. Went from destroying everything with rarely having to heal to now getting 2-3 shot by normal enemies and 1-2 shot by bosses. It was so abrupt that I feel like I'm missing something. They also went way too hard on the inaccessible areas where every 2 min I find a new spot I need to fly, swim, break the floor or get through a barrier which I can't do at the moment while the last big ability I got was 6 hours ago. I still recommend it, but only if you like metroidvania games. Combat is smooth and responsive and the game looks great but it has a lot of pacing issues for me.

_Afterimage_ 8/10. Perfect Fit. This game is long. It’s really long. But the game has fast travel unlocked from the start (after the first patch) and traversing areas is satisfying. You have map pins available at the very start and I would recommend using them heavily. I think the game is very pretty although I wouldn’t go so far as “beautiful”. The music is appropriate albeit sometimes a bit generic sounding. None of the tracks ever really stood out to me but they were by no means bad. I think the biggest detractor here is the story. It isn’t bad but it isn’t particularly interesting and sometimes people talk a bit too long. Also, I definitely think the writing suffers from translation quality at times. The good: Finding weapons is exciting. There are five main weapon types plus sub-weapons which are your magic slot. Weapons can have unique skills and/or damage types which can make for fun weapon sets. Side quests, while largely either fetch quests or find-the-npc-again-in-a-different-area add to the game’s pacing, help build out the world, and usually end in “good stuff” and/or cute little stories. They rarely, if ever feel time-waste-y. Exploration is satisfying and rewarding. Platforming segments tend to lead to new gear rather than currency caches. Enemy design is quite varied. There are a few pallet-swap types but even then they will have unique (enough) attacks. I never felt the need to grind for money or xp but also never felt too over powered or underpowered in whatever area felt like progress. The acceptable: The buildcraft in this game is close to being really fun. Each weapon type has unique attacks and unlockable skills through skill trees. You can have two main weapons equipped at a time plus one sub-weapon. Experimenting with different weapons and abilities and combo-ing in and out of skills can be really satisfying. My main issue here is how the game handles stats. Increases are largely through gear and usually in small numbers or percentages that stack. It works, and you _can_ min-max to a degree. But if you want to try out, say a poison whip build, you’re going to scroll through every piece of gear for each slot. Boss fights are fine. I beat most bosses on my first or second try with some exception to end game bosses. My biggest issue here is bosses tend to have a fairly limited attack roster to rotate through. Bosses, largely, felt fairly distinct from one another and some were even pretty cool to fight. There are few boss fights that go on, what I would consider, too long. But I could see this being a downside for some. There is not a “traditional” NG+, 100% the game is intended (and required) to complete in a single save slot. The meh: As far as progression blocking through abilities, it’s pretty straightforward. You’ll see something and either very quickly figure out a way to get to it or know exactly the ability you’ll need to progress. Some abilities really only come up once.
